Children - returning to school after flight?

Our trick is to stay up until about 6 or so in the evening then crash. We wake up around the usual time and get right back on track. The kids are usually a bit tired for a few days but able to function. This year we didn't have to do that so we took naps at silly times and were completely exhausted when we had to get up on Monday morning for school. The jet lag was much worse than usual.

Despite knowing better, I did this in 2010. We suffered jetlag for over a week that was like nothing I have ever experienced before, despite having traveled across far more time zones on other trips, the little five hour one about finished us. Simple rule: stick to the time zone you're going to and act accordingly.

Thanks again for all the replies - it is interesting to see what others do :thumbsup2

Yes, I can see how getting back into things asap can help. If you have the time, having a little nap here and there seems nice to do, but plays havoc with you getting back into timezones. I think I may struggle to keep my 7 year old awake until 6-7 pm of our first day back, without any sleep - I actually feel cruel just 'talking' about it :rolleyes2.

We will check out Glasgow flights too :lmao:. At the moment, Manchester is just way too expensive, added to the cost of us all travelling there and staying over etc, it's just gets silly :furious:.

I've always given them a few days to settle back into a normal sleep pattern before going back to school. I think last year we came back early Thursday morning and they weren't back to school until the following Monday (DD) and Tuesday (DS). I was back to work on the Monday and DH worked from home on the Friday.

I think it was more for my benefit than the children's though - I think they are pretty resilient and would have just got through whatever the situation.
