Ok. Here I go donning my flame retardent suit, (as AP put it) to start a fiery (I hope not) thread. What ever happened to adults-only in the jacuzzis? I want to relax w/my DH & I am surrounded by 5 children splashing like the hot tub is their own private little pool. The parents are sitting right next to me, oblivious to anyone but their "cute" kids. No matter which hotel, which Disney Resort or time of day or night.

I agree. Usually the parents are no where to be seen though. They let little Susy and Johnny do what they please while they go off and relax! I would never get in a WDW resort hot tub for that reason. Those tubs are always packed with little kids kicking, squealing, and probably peeing all night! They can have those hot tubs!

I noticed at OKW they have the "hot tub rules" sign, which mentions somewhere on it that hot tubs aren't recommended for very young children, but someone always had a diaper-age child in the hot tub.

Maybe it shouldn't bother me, I don't know very much about babies. Why would hot tubs be not recommended for them, because of the hot water, or because of the temperature change once they get out?

When we were there this past February my 2 teenage daughters said there was a little boy (7 or 8) with a wet suit, snokel & goggles taking up most of the hot tub while his mother sat near by and kept reminding him not to go all the way to the bottom!!! I'm afraid they were the brunt of many a joke the rest of our trip. Up here in MI children are not allowed in hot tubs (at the Holidomes etc.) for medical reasons. I thought I heard somewhere that there little bodies don't withstand the heat of the water as well as adults. ~~

I certainly will NOT flame you for this!

I TOTALLY agree!

::I honestly thought that children under a certain age were discouraged from hot tubs for safety reasons! ... you'd THINK the resorts would enforce that!::

That probably explains why the water in the hot tub at Coronado Springs wasn't so hot. It was leukwarm at best.

Of course it was filled with kids, too.

I'm on both sides of this one. My ds(61/2) loves coming in the jacuzzis with me and since we travel alone I usually let him. However, he understands that it is a place to relax and he may only sit and do just that.

That being said I too hate sharing the jacuzzi with rowdy kids while there parents do nothing. So I think maybe the problem isn't children in the hot tub, its parents who forget they are not the only people vacationing and let their children do what they please.

My son has said on more than one occasion to a rowdy child, "This is a relaxing place the fun is in the big pool!"

You won't get flamed by me either. I completely agree. However, my grandson got in with me in January at the AKL. We were the only 2 in the hot tub. He (then 8) sat back and relaxed as you're suppose to. We were sharing a moment together because DH was asleep in the room. We don't tolerate any non-sense when he vacations with us a couple to times a year. Hot tubs should be used for the purpose intended, they are not a childs bath tub.

Absolutely!!!! The last thing I want to do late at night in a hot tub is keep wiping the chlorine water out of my eyes so that little junior can swim in the hot tub!! For heaven's sake, there is a huge pool right next to it!! I don't understand people who are so rude to others through their kids. They know what they are doing , but figure since it's kids that no one will say anything. Ahhh, I feel much better and am ready to relax in the hot tub!

I agree with everyone-up here children under 12 are not allowed in the hot tubs and under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

PET PEEVE.....PET PEEVE....PET PEEVE!!!!!

At CSR they have a sign at the hot tub saying unaccompanied kids aren't allowed. The tub was filled with kids ALL the time. Jumping in and out...splashing...peeing....spilling drinks.....It bugged the living heck outta me!!!

At AKL the hot tubs are kind of separated behind greenery. Whether it's because the kids don't notice the hot tubs there, or, parents want to keep an eye on their kids, the hot tubs there were never filled with children. AND, they were HOT, the temperature a hot tub is supposed to be.

Florida law states that you can't have beverages of any kind in or on the deck of a place of public bathing. Most of the life guards can actually cite the law for you!

I absolutely agree, kids don't belong in the hot tubs. School age kids who can sit quietly and relax, yes, maybe if it's not crowded, but never younger than school age--tha'ts simply a health risk for them!

And the hot tubs should NEVER be used ofr anything but their intended use.

Next time you're disturbed by kids in the hot tub, simple. Have the life guards throw them out. And their stupid parents too.

Anne

I take my children with me into the hot tubs if they ask (they are 9 and 7), but they know to only sit and to not submerge their heads. (I can't believe how many people let their kids do this) and we limit the amount of time they are in. We didn't allow them into hot tubs anywhere until they were at least 4 yrs old if I remember correctly.
At the Disney resorts they feel the pools are much more interesting anyway and only spend a few minutes in the jacuzzi. We also try to avoid getting in one if there are bunch of adults already in them. I hope you find this kind of use acceptable. -HM

This is slightly off the main discussion but I have to ask.

Am I to understand that kids with either diapers or swim diapers are allowed in the main pools? i think that would be a board of health violation for obvious reasons.

This is by far my biggest pet peeve. I don't care who was sharing what. These kids do not belong in a hot tub. It is too hot for their bodies to adjust. Children's bodies cannot adjust to the change in temperature the way an adult's body can. Their bodies are too small with less fat to cook through. It's like putting your child in a kettle so he can cook. You probably could serve him with some carrots afterward.

Why do people insist on doing this? It is easier for the parent to enjoy him/herself in the hot tub or out if they let the child "play" or "relax" in the hot tub.

Also, children cannot control their bladders the way most adults can. If mommy is sitting there relaxing in the tub, and junior has to go..................If mommy is not nearby, and junior has to go.....................

Children under twelve do not belong in hot tubs under any circumstances!

Now I have my suit on.

We do allow our 8 and of course our 16 year old in hot tubs... however I too have been there when children are rowdy. and it is not at all enjoyable. My children have been taught to behave accordingly a hot tub is a place for relaxation and you must sit relax and above all be mindful of the other people. If they do not sit and behave they have to be taken out of the situation, The same way you would take them out of a restaurant if behavior was not appropriate. As for babies in the hot tub we never let our little guys in as Hot tubs can pass on some nasty germs. And little ones do not always heed warnings about swallowing water. Their papa owns a hotel complex and I am aware of several times people with things like open sores had to be removed from the hot tub, As well as Staph infection being passed if you have an open cut. I myself know only put my feet in.

Well, I guess I'm one of those "stupid parents" and I should be thrown out of the hot tub with my kids. :D I let my DD (5) in the hot tub only with me or her father. She isn't allowed to swim around or splash. She likes to sit there with us for about 5-10 mins and then get out. We never get in if there are several other adults in there.

I do understand, kids should not be in hot tubs unsupervised or allowed to splash around, etc. But I also don't like the unruly, usually older kids in the main pools rough housing and jumping and splashing my smaller kids. Now that's my pet peeve. Oh, yeah, usually with their parents watching or participating!:(

:D As the mother of a preschooler I won't flame you. I actually agree with you. There are certain places child just don't belong. Besides it not being save for a child and disruptive to adults using it I don't want my DD possibly seeing R-rated activity.

As an aside, children with swimmy diapers are allowed in the main pools. I'll try not to be too graphic here. Those diapers will prevent solids from getting into the water (which is a health hazard) but not necessarily liquids (which may be gross but is not a health hazard).

Thanks for the info lizziesmom. I must say I am surprised they allow disposable swimmies whch are not foolproof as I've experienced with my toddlers. We have a condo at the beach where they are strictly forbidden and heavy fines are imposed if the rule is broken because if there is a solid waste accident the pool has to be closed for two days.
