Children in hot tubs/jacuzzis

I don't think it was mentioned on any of the previous posts...and I cannot confirm if its fact or rumor..... But I was told that hot water for an exess amount of time can lead to sterility in young boys. :confused3

The germs are an issue as are the jets sucking up long hair and chlorine fumes and what not. Be sure to shower shortly after leaving the HT and use some hydrating lotion. I personally grew up in a house where we had a hot tub, but my dad kept the temperature at a reasonable leval. And we are all A-Ok. I would say ask your doctor or do some research, but myslef - being a mom of 2 boys, hope for grandchildren some day. So, although it would make my life far less worrysome in High school, I hope to be a grandmother some day and wont be taking any chances! :teacher:

** And to comment on the supervise your children line - I seccond that. There is nothing worse that ill-behaved unsupervised children. Mine included. Most adult are in a hot tub to relax, however a polite comment to those little darlings might be helpful, rather than sending glares and snide comments the parents way. No one is a mind reader. :wizard:

Those are my 2 cents for now....... Happy Bathing!

I asked our DS's dr. about them before a vacation when he was two. She said NO.. and gave some of the same reasons that were given here. I think we let him in for very short times and very well supervised when he was about 6. We also never joined an adult group and most of the time waited until it was empty.

I would check with you pediatrician, my neighbor said the doc told her it could make little boys sterile...

Hi OP here.

Thanks everyone for the interesting replies. Think we might stick with the swimming pool, the hot tub seems to raise a lot of issues. I totally agree that if children of any age are in the hot tub at all they should be well supervised and not annoying to the other bathers. Of course, this should be applied to all situations.

Thanks again. You have certainly answered my original question about the safety of hot tubs.

The germ thing is very real!

I am a health inspector and I own a hot tub! I would never go into a public hot tub let alone let DD go in one. WDW or not. The volume of water, the temp and the bather load all affect how well the chemicals work (or don't work) I have investigated some nasty complaints about hot tubs in hotels (locally obviously) only to learn how easily a hot tub can spread infection.

And as for the diaper issue, not everyone is so concerned about whether or not their babes go into a hot tub. For that reason alone, I wouldn't be the next one in to take a dip. :sad2:

On the other hand, I know who gets into my hot and I check the chem levels daily. Parnoid but infection free!
