Yes, they supervise the young children very well. They do not feed them "in the club," but all kids in the club 15 minutes before the announced dinner time (announced in the kid's navigator) are counted, hold hands, and marched to the buffet where they sit in a confined area. THey are identified and counted before leaving the club and on arrival at the buffet--reverse the procedure on the way back. A child cannot be signed in or out during the "transition" process.

I read that on another thread and didn't want to take over the thread- so I'm starting this thread to ask.....

Does this mean if your child is there during "dinner time" that they HAVE to go to the dinner? So every single child in the clubs/labs at that time is taken to dinner? What about those that have late dinner seating? There's no way for the kids to be in the clubs/labs until their dining seating time WITHOUT eating dinner with the clubs/labs?

And if that is the case- that they all must go and you cannot sign a child in or out during the transition process (and btw- does that really mean if you show up when they are lining up they won't release your child to you??? I find that hard to believe.....) - I guess that means you better pay really good attention to the clubs dining times eh? I mean if you are running late- you're stuck unable to get the child into the club/labs- no matter what your plans are- even if you don't need them to eat dinner with the clubs? And if you are running late on picking them up- you're stuck unable to get them and they have to go eat dinner with the club?

This sounds like it could get kinda sticky. I was under the impression that it wasn't a mandatory thing that they all had to go to dinner and I also didn't know there was a 15min transition period where you couldn't check your child in OR out during that time....

They are "sticky" about not signing children in or out during the transition process, but it is for the safety of the children. THe meal times are posted in the children's navigator at the beginning of the cruise, along with a notice of the 15 minute "transition time." Once the children are counted and lined up, you cannot remove your child until they are logged in at the new location. The counsellors print out a list of which children they have, and for safety, they need to arrive at the new location with that same number of children.

Yes, if a child is in the club/lab at meal time, they are taken to the buffet. If you don't want your child taken, you have to sign them out before meal time--or for an older child, give them "sign out" privleges where they can sign themselves out. That's what we did after a less than satisfactory experience with the transition procedure (I showed up on time, but they had started lining up early and refused to let me take my kid!). We made the rule that if the lab started lining up/cleaning up to get ready to eat, my DD was to sign herself out and go back to the cabin, I'd meet her there. This was because we had planned on eating as a family and she didn't like to go to Topsiders with the lab crew.

Yes, you have to pay attention to the meal times....
However...if you have late seating and are planning on taking your child to meals with you, you are probably planning on taking them to the shows (your shows are during early seating dinner). Thus, you don't want them in the club/lab during that time.

Your seating assignment makes no difference to the counsellors. At the club/lab level, if a child is signed into programming, they are expected to do whatever the programming schedule says. There are exceptions--a little one who needs a nap is certainly allowed to lie down in the club. However, a 9 year old is not allowed to play on the computers if the activity is making flubber. DOn't get me wrong...there is a lot of time where the "scheduled activity" is "Hanging in the lab" which means doing whatever you want in their very nice facility. Again, for safety, the group is kept together. If the activity is character drawing in Animator's, a child is not allowed to be napping in the club. In that case, the parent would be paged to pick up the child.

The "rules" are rarely intrusive. With an older (lab age) child, we go thru the navigator and mark the activities she wants to do. THen I remind her when it is almost time for those activities. We get 2 copies of the Navigator (one for her, one for me). We also review in the morning what she had previously selected to be sure that is still what she wishes to do. At any time, a kid can request that their parent be paged. I had promised my child (when she was club age) that I'd come if she ever wanted me called. She tested me once--just wanted to know that I'd really come, and didn't want to leave! The only time I found the policies intrusive was the time I came to get her on time and found that the "count" procedure was in progress and they wouldn't release her. IT took fully 20 minutes to get her back, as they insisted that she be taken to Topsiders and logged in there even though it was obvious to everyone that she wasn't eating with them.

Still...safety has to be more important than convenience.

On your first day you get the entire schedule for the kid's rooms ( Ocean Lab/club Navigator). If you put your child in the room, they do whatever activity is scheduled for that time. If it's a meal, they go to the restaurant for the meal. All kids do the activity scheduled. If you don't want your kid to do a particular activity, then you don't put them in the room at that time.

Kcashner- thank you for taking the time to post all that info! :)

Marklem- I realize all the children do the activities scheduled if they are there- what I did NOT realize was that with the dinner issue you were restricted from even taking your child out! So if you are running a few minutes late you are not allowed to get your child out and they HAVE to go eat with the club... that I did NOT know- and I dare say it's not something most parents would expect/assume is the case unless told.

It's really not so hard.

The rule is that no child can be checked in or out during any of the transition times. This means anytime they're moving from one part of the ship to another, you must wait until they have reached their destination and have been accounted for. They sometimes go to the movies, the sports deck and other locations as well as the buffet with the clubs.

The transition times for all of these activities will be listed in the club Navigators.

Bippidy---it's not that your child had to eat with the group if you are a few minutes late. It is that they have to walk to the buffet area with the group and be "logged in." Then, they can be checked out to you and go wherever. But, yes, to avoid hassles, it is much better to be 5 minutes early. It will save you time and aggravation.

The navitgators say no checking in 15 minutes prior to the start of an activity when a move is in required. I found out the hard way that this is not always the case. The 5-7 year olds were going to the sports deck for games at 10am. I took my son at 9:30am to the club to sign him in. I waited in line for 10 minutes and then at 10:40 they cut off signing in, and made us go up to the sports deck and wait until the group got there at 10am to sign him in there. Needless to say, my 5 year old was not happy that he had to wait 30 minutes to sign in (15 minutes of which we stood up on the deck in a very heavy wind, so that we could be first to sign in and he wouldn't miss the activity).

I'm very glad that I didn't have a spa appointment or an excursion booked etc. I was simply trying to get him to an activity he wanted to go to. If I had an appointment I would have been very late.

My point is, if you have a child in the clubs, signing in and out is time consuming, with a line much of the time, You can't just go 5 minutes before you need to be somewhere and expect to quickly sign them in and be on your way.

Ewww, kajohn- that doesn't sound very appealing.... to spend that much time signing in/out. We have 3 children in 3 different age groups! My God that sounds like we'll be spending our days just signing kids in & out! :(

Kcashner- Oh I see.... so you can get them out without them being forced to eat- you just have to go to the buffet and check them out there if they are already in line & all that. Got it. :)

BBB,

If you have kids in three different age groups then at least one must be in the lab. That was much easier for signing out, never seemed to encounter a line there. You can also give them sign out privleges, which makes it easier also (if you feel they can handle it)

Also, my kids did not like just going to the clubs for long periods of time, they preferred to pick and choose based on the activities. The lines always seemed worse before a popular activity (which seemed to be the ones my kids chose).

Also, there are two age groups in the club, so if both groups are in the same location at the time, you would check them both in at the same place, which will help as well.

I got smart as the week went on, checking them in at least 1/2 hour before a move, or letting them leave dinner early to sign them in, so they could be where they wanted to be for an activity and the lines wouldn't be as long.

Good luck, and don't stress, it is fun!!!!

I never encountered a wait of more than a few minutes to check in or out at the lab. Of course, we cruise off season. Yes, lines at the club happen.

Since you all now so much about the kids club, maybe you will know about this. My DD4 has a peanut allergy and I would not choose for her to eat with the group at dinner or any meal because we have to be careful. Is there any other time when food is served to the children? Do the counselers have a way to know about allergy situations? Even though she is little she understands that there are many "kid" foods that she cannot eat but I do not want her to have to be responsible. Thank you. I am glad they are careful as the kids move around the ship, that makes me feel like they will be careful about other things too.:D

I'm not sure if they ever eat in the club. I would check the navigator's for her age group off of Barb's site to see if they have a Sundae making time or something like that and see where it is located. I beleive they move them to a food location, i.e. a restaurant that is closed etc.

My son who was 7 at the time has an allergy to nuts (tree kind, walnuts, pecans etc.). It is not as common to have those type of nuts in food, so it wasn't such a worry for me, but they did note it in their files when I registered him.

You can also request a medical form before you sail that you have your doctor fill out, so they have her allergy on file.

Since it is a peanut allergy, and it is so common in foods, I would recommend not having her eat with the club at all. Also, you can let your servers know, and they will help you with food choices for her.

I never saw any food or drinks in the club, I believe that there is a water fountain, but that is it.....

Thank-you. We will fill out a med form and always carry meds with us so it is good to know that they will keep a copy in the club. She would not eat any meals in the club as I would prefer we eat as a family anyway. As long as any other food outings would be listed we can just not attend them, no problem there. I am glad they don't do little candy prizes for games etc. then I don't have to worry.:D We are just learning how careful we need to be as she is just starting to eat at places by herself like pre-school. I am sure they have delt with this before!:D Thanks again!

Yes, kajohn... 2 in club, 1 in lab (I believe. Their ages will be 4, 7 and 11 by then). At this point I doubt I'd let my oldest have sign out privileges- she'll only be turning 11 just days before the trip and has ADHD- she'll have to mature quite a bit in the next year for me to do that. So she'll most likely be signed in/out by me also.
If I know my kids... they'll be wanting to spend the majority of their time in the clubs- except to go swimming. We'll probably have to force them to come out to eat and go to the shows. LOL
If they end up only wanting to go in to do some activities- I'll go sign them in early like you mentioned....
