Children and deodorant

I had to start using it when I was in 3rd grade. I think it just depends on the kid, some need it sooner than others.

I have enjoyed this thread as my dd is 7 and the hair on her legs is getting longer and darker. I have a feeling deodorant is not far off as well as leg shaving! Poor kid. I really don't want to see her or any other kids have to start these tedious routines (I am referring more to the shaving) at such young ages. *sigh*

If you need to move away from him because of the smell he needs to start suing deordorent. Some kids need it sooner than others.

GOSH!!! Even this mom of 4 - ages 9 to 22 is learning something here! :) My older 3 DDs did not go through the puberty "thing" until they were 11, 12 or so. One started her period at 13 1/2, one at 14, and our 13 year old (tomorrow :) ) has not started yet. So these 3 were more than ready to do all of the "grown up" things - like using deodorant probably BEFORE they really needed to. :)
But then there is my 9 year old!!! I figured that she would just follow the same path as her sisters. But I am afraid that she is going to pass my 13 year old up in development!!! And for quite some time, I have noticed that her hair smells bad if she has not washed within the last day or so. And looks funky too. I have not noticed body odor per se, but perhaps I will see if she is "interested" in deodorant.
I was worried about her "developing" so early - at least relative to her sisters (and me and her grandmothers and aunt as well) - but it makes me feel better to know that she is in no way alone.
Thanks everyone. :)

Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions. I'm glad to know that it's not unusual for a child so young. I think we'll be off to Walgreens this weekend to get my DS some deodorant. Maybe if he's with me, it will be a little easier for him to accept the idea.

Alabamaalan, you made me laugh!! Do you still have that taste in your mouth? I can't imagine! How funny!

Thankfully, it's been a few years so the taste is gone.

Does this mean I am not invited to be the guest lecturer at your household hygiene seminar?

Tell him to always read the can first!!! :p

My son is turning 12 and his face is starting to break out. I use Mary Kay and I'm sure as heck not spending the $ for him on MK. So what kind of cleanser does a boy use? Thanks.
