Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with their children having anemia? I'm *thinking* Destiny is anemic. She is pale and her gums are VERY pale. She gets every little bug that goes around. She has a doctor appt in March, so I will ask then, but I'm wondering if I were to start upping her iron intake now if that would help?

(Just a disclaimer: Yes, I will call the doctor next week. I'm not using the DIS to replace my doctor. I know the DIS people are not doctors. I know I should seek medical assistance. I am just asking opinions/suggestions from those who have gone through or might know)
End of disclaimer.

Kristy- The females in my family all are anemic. DD takes 1/2 of a children's vitamin every day (recommended). I noticed DD tended to be more pale etc. She has looked a lot better since I increased her iron. She has not really been sick though (knock on wood.)

I was never diagnosed as anemic until I was PG with DD and then I was extremely anemic. Came to find out that my Mom always runs borderline anemic. My Sister is the same. My Mom's Dr. recently put her on Prenatal vitamins for anemia (she's 48.) :p

I am just glad that I am aware of this now so I can really watch for it in DD and make her Ped. aware also. :)

I was an anemic child and the wisdom of the day (so very long ago) was that I should eat liver 3 times a week and have an iron injection every month :( ACK! I hate liver and boy did those iron injections hurt :(

I hope Destiny isn't anemic but if she is I sure hope there is some kindly vitamin she can take.

Hi there! My youngest DD was diagnosed with severe anemia this past October. She actually had Pica (from the anemia) which caused her to eat ALOT of paper products, which ofcourse, led us to taking her into the Pediatrician. She had gotten lethargic, VERY pale, and had very dark circles under her eyes. After talking to the Doctor he determined the anemia had come from her drinking WAY too much milk so her body wasn't getting the nutrients she needed. Unfortunately, DD's anemia was so severe it almost started to affect her liver and her kidneys :( The doctor prescribed ALOT of iron drops for her (almost 3.5 mil a day) and a very strict diet (ie no snacks, limited dairy products, etc) She now is on the road to recovery, getting her blood taken monthly and still taking iron drops.
I would say if you even *think* your child has anemia, take them in and have blood drawn. You definitely do not want to have the scare we had here *hugs*
Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

my son was anemic as a baby and had to have drops I think for almost 2 years...It wasn't that bad...Stained his teeth but once we were able to stop the drops the stains went away...So if they do put her on drops make sure you put it too the back of her mouth and then wash/brush her teeth.
