Child seat in hold

We have flown with virgin twice now with big stage two seats and never been damaged, first year outbound we had them wrapped at check in by a company at gatwick, on way back virgin gave us large bags, last year we used the same bags again with no problem. This year we shall be doing the same for the twims seats

We checked in at DTD in April and did just that, handed it in at MCO (it's not at the gate, it's at the oversized luggage bit).

Ours was thoroughly wrapped in bubble wrap and in a car seat bag and made both journeys unscathed (although the car seat bag wasn't quite so lucky and was a bit bashed up and ripped)

:goodvibes

Thanks for that! :goodvibes I did try and phone Virgin but I got fed up of waiting to actually speak to someone! Mind you've I've already been given the wrong info! Good job that DISers know what I'm supposed to do! :thumbsup2

So did you just take tape and bubble wrap to the airport with you and do it there?

We checked in at dtd both times and then asked for bags at airport and then bagged them there, you have to take them to oversize luggage which is oppositevirgin desks :-)

Now you've got me worried! I specifically asked about checking in the car seat because we always do check in at DTD and would need the car seat to get back to the airport. I was told that there would be no problem checking it in at DTD and handing it in at the gate at MCO. I think that I'd better phone them again and double check! Thanks for the heads up, as ours is going to be in a car seat bag also!

We checked in at the airport so that's why. We had to walk it over to the oversized baggage area :)

We've taken a seat (or 2) more than once on flights to the US. They've never gone missing and have always come through just fine. We put them in a carseat bag and filled out the rest of the bag with diapers and clothes on the way out and with our dirty laundry inside plastic bags (hotel laundry bags actually) on the way back. It padded the seat(s) and provided extra room for souvenirs in the luggage.

When we used to use DTD check in we did exactly was Luke did. I would get it tagged and drop it at oversized baggage mainly as I didn't want to carry a big car seat through the airport.

They are used to people doing that :thumbsup2

Stroller did used to come to the gate but thankfully we are past that now :goodvibes

We've decided to order a car seat from Amazon.com and get it shipped to OKW. That way we are sure that the seat hasn't been damaged. We will use it for the 3 weeks and then when we get to MCO on the way back we'll just leave it there. So if anyone needs a car seat and will be at MCO on the 30/8 around 5 o'clock let me know!

We're also taking a 2nd seat with us and getting ME from MCO to OKW. That way I figure if the seat is damaged on the way out we can purchase a new one once we get to OKW. On the way back we're just taking the hire car to MCO and then getting picked up from MAN. If for some reason the seat is damaged on the way back one of us will just come back on the train with the baby.

ETA forgot to say that we've purchased a travel bag especially for car seats, so hopefully that will add some protection!

When we travelled on ME they wouldnt let us keep our baby in the car seat as the coaches dont have seatbelts, so the car seat + baby becomes a flying missile in the event of an accident. We had to put it underneath with the suitcases.

We have travelled the last 2 years with an infant car seat and havent had damage, although it does happen. Although I was stupid and forgot to take the extra padding out of the seat (the head rest part) and this got lost, but its my own fault!

We're not using our travel system, so we didn't intend on putting the baby in a car seat until we were actually in a car. We have now decided to order a car seat to be delivered to OKW, so hopefully there won't be a problem! :goodvibes

We have always taken our kids car seats with us, the stage 2 seats are pretty bulky and the airline provided us with some big plastic bags and we had to take them to oversized bagged to go in the hold. With some of the American airlines if your seat is FAA approved they will allow you to take them on the flight, but you have to get it okayed before you fly.

Now that they are in lightweight highbacked boosters we tend to pack them in our baggage as we use holdall style suitcases, then I pack the clothes and stuff around the seats, we get 4 bags as standard and this is plenty of space for when you are staying in a villa we find. :)
