I saw Bill O'Reilly on T.V. saying the number is probably up only slightly but with more vigorous reporting we hear of them more often. Also years ago these people would have been ostracized more and less attempt would be made to "rehabilitate" them. There are people that don't think there is pure evil in this world and the reason these monsters do these things is always someone else's fault...parents, society etc. I personally do not feel they can be rehabilitated. What's your opinion?

No, they won't be rehabilitated-they just become more creative in hiding their animalistic crimes. I agree with that report. It's sad, but true. In the past, families were ashamed to report things like that. Most of the time it was friends or family members that performed these heinous crimes on innocent children, so they kept things quiet. I'm glad in today's society we don't just sweep things under the rug, that we make these idiots pay for their crimes. No punishment is too severe for them, and in my opinion-the perpetrators get too much leniency.

I also agree that these imbeciles blame someone else. It makes them justify their crimes in their sick sadistic heads.

Can you tell I detest pedophiles?

I believe the stats that say there's no more or less of them now than years ago. It's the "hot story" for the summer to cover, however, so each abduction is getting more press. The good side of this is that some of the kids are getting found quickly thanks to the press coverage. The bad side of it, unfortunately, is that it can tend to turn everyone into paranoid parents.

As far as rehabilitation goes -- I don't know. I would tend to think that no, most probably can't be rehabilitated, but I'd imagine every case is different.

I do not believe any "numbers", and I do not agree with O'Reilly.

The reason we are hearing it is because their isn't something better.
I do not believe that they were ostracized years ago. In fact in was overlooked long ago same as it is today.
Not too much has changed and to me THAT is what the problem is.

I agree that the numbers probably aren't up, just public awareness.

I disagree that they would have been ostracized, if anything they were just ostracized from the area they were and moved on to a new hunting ground. Because it was often swept under the rug they could go as if nothing happened.

I don't think they can be rehibilitated, no therapy has successful results except maybe castration but that isn't an approved method here.

from my house....was a convicted child molester....Now he has been living here for a year and I didn't know...but it scared me to pieces...I wonder....do they rehabilitate and become a real person again....or is it a crime waiting to happen.....I think people also keep family predators a secret......what do you think?

Well I beleive in repentance, that it is possible.

I beleive in risk and mittigating it.

I beleive in resposibility and consequences.

Rehabilitated or not some crimes are so bad that in committing them an individual forfeits the right to rejoin society. This is without question on that list.

So I think there is plenty of time to repent and make peace with your maker in a jail cell and little oppertunity to harm more innocence.

I realy would not like to see this thread hijacked but I am not opposed to the death penalty per se but the inconsistancy of the legal quality of convictions in its application is an issue for me. That said the abuse, tourture and murder of a child is IMHO grounds for its use.

There is a current trial in the Chicago area that dates from the molesting and murder of three young boys in the 1950's. These crimes did occur years ago but a lot of families were too ashamed to go public with them. Sadly this is still true. More than anything children need o be educated about what is wrong and to tell someone if there is a problem. These criminals strive on secrecy and the more press each crime recieves will make the next one a little more difficult to commit. I hope.
