I don't have a link for it but a 5 year old boy was sent into the men's restroom at a rest stop in Concord, NC on his way home from Florida. He was sexualy assaulted by an adult male while in the bathroom. The man who did it has already molested another child and is waiting to be tried.

This is why my son will NOT go into a restroom without myself or a responsible adult until he is much older!!!

I do not blame you on keeping our kids safe.......thanks for telling us

A 5 year old is awfully young to go the a rest stop bathroom alone. This gets me though:
The man who did it has already molested another child and is waiting to be tried.
So he has presumably molested another child and is out right now? Sometimes I hate our legal system. :(

I totally understand and agree with your actions. It is good to know that there are still parents who care and take responsability for there childen, even though some may disagree.

This is a pathetic story. The guy is out on bond AGAIN after being out on bond for molesting a 9 year old boy in a Walmart bathroom last year (the Walmart I shop at). In the Walmart incident, the boy went in the bathroom and his dad was waiting outside. The guy attacked the boy who got away and told his dad. The dad tackled the guy and sat on him until the police got there. With the first case, the trial has been put off a few times. Apparently the judge in the second case was not aware of the first incident until after setting the $50,000 bond. This man is a menace and should not be free on any count. He was CAUGHT IN THE ACT TWICE! It makes me sick! With the 5 year old, he went into the bathroom with his two older brothers. His 10 year old brother peaked under the stall door when he found it was locked and saw the man. You cannot be too careful with your children. There are some serious sickos in this world. My daughters won't be going in a bathroom alone anytime this decade.

What a terrible story.

Exactly!! God help me the day someone tries to harm my child.

That's so scary! DS is getting to the age where he's asking to use the bathroom by himself in public....That won;t be happening though! I certainly hope this guy is locked up forever!

And yet there are some women who will give me looks when I take my 5 y/o son into the bathroom with me! What is wrong with these ladies? Hello! There is a door on the stall. The only thing my son is going to see is you washing your hands!

I always think of that little boy whose aunt stood outside a campground bathroom waiting for him to come out. While she was OUTSIDE the bathroom, some psycho slashed the little boy's throat. He died.

Nope--Sorry if bothers some people, but if dh isn't with us, my sons (the other is four and tiny--I have yet to get "the look" for him) will go into the bathroom with me.

Ellester...thanks for adding the rest of the story! It makes me sick to think that are people out in this world who could do this to a child. It also makes me crazy to know that eventually my son will have to go by himself...but that might have to wait until college!!!! hehe

Where are the good ole days? You know when your parents would let you leave after breakfast and tell you to be back in time for dinner, the time when doors didn't have to be locked and so forth. I sometimes hate the world we live in and the way it treats people, but then I can only hope that the kids I'm raising and those around me will raise their children to take things back to the way we were...oh lord, i'm starting to preach!

Same here! And I was actually flamed on another thread for saying that my boys go into the womens room with me  Well my 2 oldest are 16 and so they do use the mens room together but my 2 little ones will continue to go with me to the womens room til I feel they are old enough and big enough. And no the 2 oldest arent always with us or dh. As long as there are sickos like this out there you just cannot be to careful.

I don't give it a second thought when I see a young boy in the restroom with his mom. I would not want them to take a chance with their precious child!

TC:cool:

I'm sick to death after reading your post!! We just came back from WDW & there were times that my DH didn't get out of the car because the baby was sleeping, so I made my 8 y/o son come with me to the restroom & not once did anyone give it a second look. Only a little girl about his age looked at him funny & then he really was embarrassed but WHO CARES! My son got thru all those rest stops SAFELY & that's what counts!

I also ask him to stay in the stall until I come out & this way we wash our hands together (I don't know if some wacko would snatch him away while he's out there waiting for me to come out of the stall!)

After reading your post, I probably will have him come with me till he's about 35!

These things went on then too, but no one talked about it, kids were not believed, those that were had to go through agonies in a legal system not designed to advocate for the child. There were no DNA tests to help with identification .
I remember 25 years ago there was a rapist in Philly, the Jogging Rapist. All dressed in jogging outfits, he would go out early in the mornings and grab young girls on their way to school. A friend of mine was sexually molested in a public swimming pool by the father of another kid- no one believed her because HE said it didn't happen.

You said exactly how I feel!!!!

Sorry you were flamed for stating that you protect your children by keeping them with you while using the restrooms. It is strange that a fellow DIS member would be so uneducated about what goes on in the world.

I hope it has not detered you from keeping your little ones safe. Maybe I will start carrying around a notebook filled with clippings concerning children molested/killed in public bathrooms. Then when I get a dirty look, I can hand the notebook to the sourpuss who is ignorant. Let's face it, little boys in unattended bathroom stalls seem like a prime target for molesters.

Makes me sick. Makes me sicker to think that there are women out there who oppose mothers keeping their children safe.

Telling my son he'll have to go in the womens bathroom with me always gets him to "try" before we leave home. :) As for the times when we are out and Dad isn't with us, my boys go with me. I try to use a handicapped stall or a family bathroom so that we can all go in together. My boys will be with me for many years to come.

J.C. is 12 and I just started letting him go alone in the past oh year and a half. A 10 year old was murdered a few years ago in a mens room in a mall near me.

You know what I don't care what any women out there thinks....I'm keeping my child safe and I'm sorry but thats the way its going to be. Goodness I would hate for someone to look at me or say something out of the ordinary, there is NOTHING and I do repeat NOTHING in this world more important to me than my child and his safety!

My ds (7) never goes to the restrooms by himself in public. I travel without my dh and have no choice but to take him in with me. I would love to print a story like this as a handout to all those who believe he is in the washroom only to peak at them!

EEKS!!!!! 1. That is just WRONG. Lord help my kids when they come along...won't be going anywhere without me by their sides.
2. Can't believe something horrible like that happened in Concord...considered to be a very safe town.

I have absolutely no problem with someone bringing a boy into the womans restroom. What difference does it make? I have yet to go into a womans restroom that didn't have stalls. I can see where someone might have a problem with girls going into a mens restroom because it isn't exactly private. I took my son in with me when DH was not with me. It's my responsibility to keep him safe. I have never seen anyone who minded. When he got old enough to go into the mens room himself he was told that I would be standing outside of the door and if anyone gave him any problem to scream and I would be right in. DH told my dd the same thing when she had to go into a women's restroom by herself.

This is a horrible story made even worse because this guy is a repeat offender and keeps getting out.
