A child under 18 flying on their own ticket does not need any form of identification to fly within the US. If the child is under two and flying as a lap baby without a ticket, then you will need a copy of their birth certificate to prove that they are eligible to fly on that basis.

I've always brought their birth certificates and showed them, one time TSA asked them who we were (they wanted to hear mommy and daddy). I just like to be over prepared! But chances are you won't need it.

No it is not "chances are you won't need it"

You won't need it!!!!! kids do not need ID to fly with the only unless being they are flying for free as a lap child then they need proof they are under 2 not proof of who they are.

The TSA also don't care if you are Mommy and Daddy or John Smith. They were probably trying to put a name with a ticket to see who they needed ID for. They don't police for who is taking the kids, it is not their job or their business.

There's nothing preventing anyone from doing this and if you are more comfortable carrying a birth certificate or passport for a child under 18, you certainly should do so. It is not required, however. TSA generally, although not always, will ask a child some question, such as their name or, as noted, who they are traveling with.

Just to clarify the TSA dosen't need to know who is flying with whom, their only task is to verify the name on the boarding pass matches the person passing though security.

Children under 18 don't need ID at all - verification can be found on the airlines websites and more importantly on the TSA website.

The exception is for a child under two flying without a ticket and the ID is to verify they are young enough to fly free.

I travel with my dd's almost monthly and have never, ever have they been asked for ID or to identify me. They are often asked their name and occasionallly how old they are.

I also travel with my neices and although they have a different last name and are of a different ethnic background not once have they been asked for anything other than their name.

FWIW a Birth Certificate isn't an acceptable form of ID anyway. If it makes you feel better to bring one - or a passport then fine. But for those who don't have one handy or would rather not bring one it is just not neccessary.
