My daughter (2) has allergies and post nasal drip. This has made for a few nights of poor sleeping for both of us. Wheneve she lays down she coughs so badle she is almost choking. I inclined her mattress and she has a humidifier. Any other suggestions, I really am trying to avoid a cough suppressant if this is going to be seasonal. Thanks

My dd has had allergies and has nightly PND since 2ish and she is 9 now. Dr. prescribed a low dose of Zyrtek and it works great! DD takes it at night and it works for 24 hours. She used to call the PND "the ahem's" that is how the Dr> knew what to do LOL.

Definately check with the pediatrician as they have many great safe things for children now.

eta - you can do the zyrtek seasonally and it has minimal side affects as opposed to the otc stuff.

Maybe the doctor can prescribe a nasal spray. Poor little thing!

DD 10 is starting this and I started giving her a "healthy" dose of benedryl (sp?).....I say healthy dose since she is a "healthy" 10 1/2 yo.......probably weighs more than most 12 yos!!!

And, it has helped alot!!!!!!!!

Another vote for Zyrtec. It's worked for both my kids with seasonal allergies very well, they sleep much better and miss less school from waking up nauseous. They only need to take it for a month or two during the spring.

do you have dust-barrier encasings on the pillows and mattress? you can get these at Penney's now, also through allergy catalogs.

Claritin is also over in a liquid. Ask the pediatrician about trying an antihistimine. I hope something helps.

My DD has the same problem. She is 8 months old and I am a big fan of Donatussin. It has to be prescribed, but it really works well - in fact my DD didn't cough at all tonight when she went to sleep and she has been coughing for the last couple of days (I just started her back on the Donatussin Monday night). The reason I like Donatussin is because it doesn't make her as drowsy as Benadyl. It has to be taken w/ alot of water so you have to plan your doses accordingly.

My 4yo DS has allergies and uses Zyrtec. When he gets a bad head cold, he will also have bad asthma symptoms which involved nighttime coughing. At that time, he also gets a dose of Albuterol and we recently got a nebulizer to use if he is really bad. He only needs these asthma drugs when he has a cold. My 6yo DD used to do the coughing until she threw up thing when she was younger also. I don't know how she avoided the asthma symptoms, but she pretty much outgrew the nightime coughing and gagging. It's so hard. Good luck.

Glad you asked this hd&l. My DD has been having trouble with the 'ahems' during the day and, coughing at night, when she lays down. I thought allergies at first but, she doesn't have the sneezing. itchy & watering eyes and nasal problems like DS so, I thought it was something else. I didn't realize it could still be allergies. :o I've had similar symptoms, with a lump in my throat for weeks due to sinuses and, I'm on a prescription decongestant and, an antibiotic. I really should have made some connection between DS's symptoms as well as mine. Calling the Ped. tomorrow for advice! ::yes::

Have you tried a nasal saline solution? That sometimes helps. My kids are older than your dd, so I have them put a wet wash cloth over their nose and have them breath in the water from it, and that helps (about the same idea as the solution, but they think they're too big for that).

Vicks vapor rub helps too.

If her cough is real bad, I'd call the ped to see what he/she recommends, or see if he/she can call something in at the pharmacy for her cough.
