I am hoping some of the US readers could help me with this problem. Some years ago when on vacation in Florida we had dinner in Friendlys restaurants and I always loved their Chicken pot Pie. 3 years ago they stopped serving it, due to low customer demand!!!

Does anyone have a good receipe for this dish, even better if it is similar to Friendlys' version.

My fingers are crossed - chicken pot pie is good winter food!!

There is a very easy-to-make one on the Bisquick box. It's very simple and delicious!! In fact I just made it for my in-laws the other day.

Are you talking about the kind that has large flat noodles in it or the kind that's like a pie with a crust? I've never had it or seen it at Friendly's. If it's the noodle type, here is my grandmother's recipe. It's a Pennsylvania Dutch thing as far as I know. Unfortunately, Gram was never big on measuring things - it was always "just add xx until it looks right"! LOL Also it was always made with the leftover carcass from a chicken or turkey & the scraps of meat, but that's because she was just frugal beyond belief! I'll do that, but we also just toss some chicken pieces in the pot, cover with water & then use that.

Potpie
chicken or turkey bones
4-6 c water
4 tsp chicken bouillon
4 carrots, chopped
3 ribs celery, chopped
3 potatoes, cut in chunks
1½ tsp celery salt or powder
1 Tbl parsley
2 eggs
1 c milk
2 tsp salt
1½ Tbl baking powder
flour

Cover bones with water, bring to a boil & then simmer at least 1 hour. Remove bones from water. Add veggies & spices. Simmer until veggies are tender. Add any remaining chicken or turkey, cut into pieces. Combine eggs, milk, salt & baking powder. Add flour until a dough forms & can be rolled out. Roll out thin & cut into squares. Drop in boiling broth. Boil 20 minutes. (Less bouillon is required if using chicken pieces instead of bones.)

Piratesmate,

No the Friendly's Chicken Pot Pie is not the PA Dutch stuff that your grandmother makes, it is more of the pie type with a crust. I don't have a recipe for the Friendly's pot pie. To me it always tasted like the Campbell's chunky chicken soup in a pot pie crust. The PA Dutch style stuff to me is much better. But than again Grandmother's in this area just don't have recipes for anything.

In that case, this is how I make it - but I still don't know what Friendly's is like.

Leftover Chicken Pie
1 jar chickengravy
1/2 c water
2 Tbl flour
1/8 tsp pepper
1 tsp chicken bouillon
1/2 tsp parsley
1/8 tsp garlic powder
2 c cooked chicken
2 c potatoes
2 c mixed vegetables
prepared pie crust
Mix gravy, water, flour, pepper, bouillon, parsley & garlic in a large bowl. Stir in chicken, potatoes (canned or nuked & peeled) & veggies. Pour into ungreased casserole. Top with pie crust & seal edges. Cut slits in top & bake at 425 for 30 min, until crust is golden brown & liquid bubbles through slits.

If the Friendly's stuff has a thick crust on it (since DsnyDrmr mentioned Bisquick I'm guessing it does) there are recipes on the box of Bisquick or Jiffy mix. I don't know if you can get anything like that in the UK. It's a biscuit mix that has recipes on it for things like shortcake, pancakes, muffins, dumplings, etc. It's an all-purpose mix. You could just make the shortcake recipe (not the sweet one, the one for meat) and add extra mix to make it stiffer. Then roll it out.

Well, maybe that would be a good place for ERICS MUM to start. Instead of Bisquick, I've used the Pillsbury Grands biscuits on sale for the crust, or the crescent rolls are really flaky & yummy. Add more frozen mixed veggies & a little flour to thicken up the sauce more.

I've also used a can of Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Chicken soup as my base. Again, added frozen mixed veggies & diced, cooked chicken. Bake as per directions for the rolls.

Sounds so good! Love a good chicken pie.
I know we use different terms each side of the Atlantic, but Piratesmate - 'nuked' potatoes??!!

When I hear/see "nuked" when cooking, I think microwave oven. I think she means she would either buy a can of potatoes or cook them in the microwave oven ("nuke" them).

Um sorry! :rotfl: That's a term used by my sisters for microwaving things & I didn't notice that I'd used it in the recipe. I originally printed that out for DDIL. It may have started because in the early days there was often a "melt-down" inside the thing - especially when using something made of poor grade plastic? I mean, plastic is plastic, right? LOL If MsSocks stops by maybe she'll tell us where it came from. :rotfl2:

And Imsadi - using the Pillsbury Grands or Crescent Rolls sounds really yummy! I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip! :teeth:

Ladies, thanks for your inputs. As a result I'm really hungry now and on Uk time its nearly midnight so I can't cook until tomorrow!!!

Is it too late to jump in here?
I have a super easy chicken potpie recipe and it is good!
2 ready-made pie crusts (if the kind you can get are in a pie tin, let one thaw and remove from the tin to be the top crust)
1 can of chicken (drained)
1 can of mixed veggies (called "VegAll" here in the states -- it has corn, peas, carrots, green beans) -- drained
1 can cream of chicken soup (undiluted)
Mix chicken, vegetables, and soup. Pour into one crust and top with the second crust. Poke a few holes in the top with a fork. Bake at 350 for 45 min.
This recipe is MUCH better than the bisquick one!

Too funny, DS13 and I went to Friendly's last night for a late supper and I asked for chicken pot pie!!! The waitress looked at me as if I had 5 heads and said "oh you are from way back, we got took them off the menu years ago" how was I supposed to know??? :confused3 Anyway, I agree i liked them alot too!!! I think the crust was more of a flaky pastry crust though almost like a croissant and not an actual dense pie crust!

YUM!!! - WHEN'S DINNER?

Thanks for all your recipes, I plan to work through them all!!!! (Secretly I was hoping one of you would be a top exec in Friendlys and would post to tell me you were re-introducing their chicken pot pie back on the menu!!)
