Chicken exits

It’s my understanding that there are “chicken exits” on all Disney thrill rides for guests who experience a queue, but have second thoughts about a ride at the last minute. Can anyone confirm? Is it just a matter of informing the CM at the loading station if you want to utilize this option?

I went through the pre show on Tower because I really wanted to see it, then I bailed out the chicken door and DH proceeded to the ride.

My husband has tried several times to get our daughter and I on TOT. We hate drops. We have to summon all of our courage to do the occasional coaster. The only thing that makes the coasters bearble are the moments without the drops. The notion of getting on an elevator that repeatedly drops you for some random number of times seems horrifyingly ludicrous to us, but then there's the theming ... and my husband's unrelenting nagging. So we went, the area
was actually very pretty on the outside with beautiful flowering bushes and viney flowers hanging down from a perogola. The inside was creepy, lots of little treasures for Twilight Zone enthusiasts to enjoy. My daughter was worried the entire time that there wouldn't actually be a chicken exit. There could have been a show based on that alone. We told the cast member we would be exiting when he asked the number of riders. He told us that someone would be coming to escort us out. Now here is the funny bit, the cast member that came to get us had to take a knee scooter back to the ground level for a guest. He may have just been in character, but I'd sooner say he was really put out about the whole situation. I tried to engage him in some chit chat and the response was curt, this struck me funny, so I continued undaunted with the one sided conversation. My daughter described it as a really awkward one and done. I however would do it again, I still don't know if he was in character or just having a bad day.

just remember the exit for Tower Of Terror has you taking an elevator with a CM who is in character

I use the "chicken" exits on occasion to stand in line with my kids before they go on a ride I don't care to go on. They are all old enough now to ride on their own, but three kids almost the same age in a line that lasts over two minutes is a recipe for disaster :-)

I do this too, space mountain and primeval whirl (that one has a nice seating area you can wait in). My kid is more of a thrill seeker than I am :)

Does it help to know that it actually *pulls* you? It’s not a drop that relies on brakes to stop the drop. It’s a pull and then it stops pulling.

Makes all the difference to me, both physically (it feels different than a drop ride) and emotionally.

In character. TOT CMs are terrific at that.

I have yet to get a "fun" CM in character at the Chicken Exit of ToT.
I always try to start a conversation too- like- oh we are going on an elevator?! and Nothing!

Tower of Terror pulls you down to achieve a drop more aggressive than gravity alone. It does need brakes to stop when it has gone down far enough for that part of the drop sequence. I think ToT has some magnetic brakes used to customize how aggressively it stops and also not require frequent replacement of brake shoes but there are probably emergency brakes with shoes as well.

For those who are claustrophobic, there are vertical drop rides in other amusement parks. Most are not enclosed in elevator shafts but have an open view of the park from the top. The ride loads and unloads from the same area so it is easy to make a last minute change of mind and exit without riding.

Hmm, pulling might not be so bad. It's weightlessness and that uncomfortable feeling in my stomach like my organs are moving around, that I can't abide. Did my husband bribe you to tempt me?

Well, before you make a decision you’ll regret, I have to tell you that you’re being pulled faster than you could fall, so you’ll get plenty of the weightless, uncomfortable feeling!

PS I hate ToT also, and I used to send DH and DD on it without me. Now that DD is all grown up and doesn’t travel with us anymore, I ride ToT once per trip just to be nice. DH is on his own after that.

The chicken exits aren't limited to just thrill rides, though. I know the Haunted Mansion has a chicken exit that can be accessed after guests make their way through the stretching room. Just be sure to let a Cast Member know at the loading zone and you'll be on your way.

This is what I was thinking when i read the post....if this could be used not just if you chicken out, but if you want to stand in line with your kids but don't want to go on the ride. I have eye issues and have to avoid many rides (detachmnet a few years ago) but would rather walk them through the ride and then just not go on....but not have to walk the queue backwards as that's super annoying for everyone in line.
