So, I'm at work having chick pea salad for dinner and I offer some to a buddy of mine, who says " Chick pea salad is just hummus that hasn't been chewed. No thanks". :rotfl2:

So, do you like hummus? AKA "Chick Pea Salad That Hasn't Been Chewed"....

And what do you like in yours?

another one who LOVES hummus on warm pita bread.

What do you put in your chick pea salad?

I like hummus as long as it's homemade, not store-bought.

I love hummus with pita chips-made at home-baked not fried.
Yummy! I could eat a whole batch myself--it is so good for you too.

There is a Mediterranean food kiosk in the hospital where I work--they put olive oil and paprika on their hummus--YUM! I like to scoop it up with pieces of cut-up pita bread. I also like chick peas in regular salad, not to mention falafel!

Is it? I have always wondered.... the nutritional value listed on the store bought stuff is NOT impressive at all.

I make hummus as well. I just made it last week!

I'm not usually a fan of store bought hummus but Trader Joes makes a nice one.

Could you post your recipe or PM it to me? I tried to make it once and it was just icky.

I don't like hummus, but I do like chick peas. I use them in chili and as salad toppers. (like croutons)

Isn't hummas just dirt? I see it at Home Depot.

( :teeth: )

LOVE hummus. Hate chickpeas any other way. Go figure.

My FIL is from Israel and makes the best homemade hummus in the world. One of the (few) reasons I love to see him on occassion. :rolleyes1

I've never tried store bought hummus, so I've no idea as to its nutritional content or what ingredients they use. The way my Lebanese grandmother taught me only has chickpeas (I use canned, too lazy to cook from dried :teeth: ), tahine (sesame paste), lemon juice, garlic and olive oil. It is high in fat (from the tahine and olive oil), but it's all the good fats that we should be eating anyway. It's high in fiber and has protein from the chickpeas. Eaten with whole wheat pita and a nice salad it makes for a pretty decent lunch.

I don't use a recipe (isn't that true for most things we learned from grandma?) but I use a can of chickpeas, 2-3 heaping tablespoons of tahine, juice of 1/2 to 1 lemon (to taste), all whirled in the food processor with a tiny bit of the chickpea water to make things run. I don't eat garlic, but I think my grandmother put in 1-2 cloves, maybe?? Usually doesn't need salt if the chickpeas are canned. Spread on a plate or shallow bowl, drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, dust the edges with paprika if desired (for color), and voila! Gosh, I'm starving now and it's not even 9 am :rotfl:

I love hummus. I usually buy it from Trader Joes and dip their multi seed flatbreads in it or their mini rye chips. I haven't tried making it myself yet, though it seems pretty simple. I like putting chickpeas in salads too.

I buy hummus at the local natural foods store--most store-bought brands (including theirs) is just awful, but they have one brand that's delicious. So I suspect many people who don't like hummus just haven't had the good stuff!

If you make it yourself-which I do- you can control the olive oil. My son is a body builder. He eats it because it is a healthy source of protein--all good fats too. Sesame paste and the beans are high in protein and fiber.
If you use pita chips baked in the oven it is a nutritionally sound snack.
everything in moderation though--I would eat it all!
