Hi! My family is planning to visit relatives in Edinburgh this summer. We're trying to decide if we should fly into London or Manchester and take the train or should we just fly to EDI directly. Any thoughts or advice is welcome - thanks!

If you're only planning on visiting Edinburgh, then you'd be better flying direct into Edinburgh, or Glasgow International, as it may be easier/cheaper to get flights into Glasgow and it's only an hour away.

Not only would a train journey be pretty long from London/Manchester to Edinburgh- think it was at least 5 hours the last time I got the train Manchester-Edinburgh and more for London. Train's here can be pricey unless you have your tickets booked well in advance, and even then if they are busy you are not always guaranteed a seat. I remember a couple of guys having to sit on their suitcases in the lobby of a train from Peterborough to Edinburgh one busy day. Plus there always seems to be delays and work being done on the train lines.

As long as it's not way more pricey to fly into Edinburgh (or Glasgow) I'd do that. :)

I've flown Glasgow-Chicago with American Airlines before, and IIRC they were pretty reasonably priced. :)

I am guessing that a Flight into London would be either Gatwick or Heathrow, if you wanted to catch a train up to Edinburgh you would have to catch a train from the airport into London, then use the underground (Tube) to get to Kings Cross to catch the train to Edinburgh.

Another option to look at is flying from your airport to Edinburgh. If you are looking to do that I would advise you to try and do this as part of the package as any luggage limits on the main leg of your journey is usually carried on to the domestic leg.

Hope that this helps
