Okay, so this is way off topic but, I figure I can find an answer to just about anything here. So DH is really craving Chicago style Deep dish pizza and I am looking into ordering the "taste of chicago kit" and having it mailed here for his birhtday. Has anyone done this or any of the other pizza places in chicago that do mail order. Is there really such thing as a good frozen pizza?

thanks!

This is my FAVORITE Chicago stuffed Pizza. They do mail order. I have never done it but there pizzas are oh so good. I have family who live in Downtown Chicago and visit often. I have tried them all.

Totally agree with Yankee. Giordano's rocks! I was just in downtown Chicago a few weeks ago and ate there. Awesome!

NO!

The original Chicago style pizza was created by two men at a pizza place called Uno. This is still at it's original location in Chicago, but it has also been turned into a cheap copy at the chain of Uno's.
The good part of this story is that one of the original partners started his own family run pizzeria called "Lou Malnati's". This is still the original and has been improved with buttercrust! (You have to ask for that when you order.)
Check them out at www.loumalnatis.com

We have shipped the Lou Malnatis pizza to my BIL & SIL in Cincinatti several times (they used to live in Chicago) and they tell us that they are surprisingly good for having been frozen and shipped.

pdarrah

I have recieved Giordano's by mail from a friend of mine. I do love it. The only problems which all mail order pizza has is they are not allowed to ship meat across state lines. So the only pizza you can have shipped to you is cheese or a veggie. I put my own sausage and pepperoni on it when I heated it up.

Cant really help but will chime in on the whole is frozen pizza good debate

Over in England we have a brand of Chicago Pizza sold here and I absolutely adore them. Specially meat feast style. I try and keep it to a minimum though

I couldn't wait to try Chicago deep dish pizza. I have had it around the country. I finally got to try Giordano's pizza when I was in Chicago several months ago. What a disappointment. The real thing for me wasn't as good as the imitations.

oh man, Gio's in the original south side location... then to Garrets for the carmel and cheese popcorn.

I Love Gio's but would not refuse a Lou's!

Hot and Fresh, shipped or 3 days Old and Cold! A big thick slice of heaven. Wonderful.

I always get spinich on mine.(along with other stuff) I would never get it on a regular pie, but on a Chicago Deep Dish...Ohhh Yeaaaa Baby!.

Maybe Kevin could order a Gio's and a Lou's. Heat, Eat and review?

Angie, where is "here" that you're shipping to? Perhaps if it's the Olrando area we can even make some good suggestions.
Over in Clermont (about 25 miles north of Disney) there is a teeny tiny pizza diner called Pasta Vino that serves a really good version of Chicago style pizza. I think the owners are transplants from Chicago... hmmm, maybe I'll have to go order some pizza from them just to find out. They have the closest thing to the pizza I used to get back home (north of Chicago.)

Boy I've been getting hungry reading this post!

Here is central Ohio. we have the chain Uno's here but, if that is true chicago deep dish then I am not impressed. And I have been assured that is not true deep dish.
So, I think I am leaning towards Giordano's for DH birthday. It's in 2 weeks so I will be sure to let ya'll know how it worked out.

Thanks for all the comments!

Oh, I think a review by Kevin is a wonderful idea too!!

I'm biased towards Lou Malnati's since I pass by it to and from work everyday. :)

But I love the corn meal crust that Gino's East has, which the DIS meet peeps had a couple days ago. :lovestruc

While they don't ship, if you're ever up in the area check out Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder. They have the best pizza I've ever had - they cook it 'upside down' - they call it a pizza pot pie. It was yummy, yummy, yummy.

You speak the truth about Malnati's. It is the best. However, i think the history is not entirely accurate. Lou Malnati worked with his father at Uno's and Due's. They were managers not partners. Lou worked there for 20 some years.

I think it is the best Chicago-style pizza.

Giordano's is a stuffed pizza, not Chicago-style. It is good, but not great.

Uno's and Gino's East suffer from being franchised: The franchised locations are dumbed down and the original restaurants are neglected because the focus has been on building the chain.

BTW, Lou Malnati's has an option for an italian sausage pizza where there is an entire "patty" of sausage on the pizza. My favorite is the sausage with giardinaire. Yummy!!!!

I ship a Lou's pizza to my grandparents and my cousins in Florida ever winter. It ships great and tastes even better.

I don't normally eat pizza. I don't like it. We ate it every Friday night when I was growing up and I am sick of it. BLECH!

However, I love Lou's and actually did a happy dance when they built one 7 miles from my house. :cool1:
