CHICAGO Distance Classic -- August 12, 2007

LAST YEAR'S REPORT FROM PAT Go to page 1 post #12 and page 4 post #53 and #56. (Don't be fooled by the August 2007 date. It must be prophetic is all I can say!)

My pace can vary from 14-16 depending upon the day and I've not problem slowing down more. My goal is to get the medal within the time and have an enjoyable journey. I plan to play at the back of the pack and Maggie, if you are looking for a chat buddy I'm sure it will happen. If we get up a group of us the time will pass quickly and fun will be had by all!

Some planning questions: I am up for most anything as far as meetings. I've been thinking on the Gino's and wonder what everyone thinks about doing this as a lunch thing instead of supper. Only reasoning is that the lines are less out the door earlier than I think I've heard about as the day goes on. Some discussion and decisions will be in order these next few days for those of us who will be able to play on Saturday.

Will we see each other at the expo? Do we want to? Can we?

Lily, Thanks for the link to Pat's race report.

Pat, I look forward to reading your race report!

I am interested in lunch, even a late lunch if better for most. Gino's will get busy into the evening, and it will probably be easier to accomadate all of us if we go off times.

Most likely, I will hit the expo sat am. I will just find something fun to do in between with my kids before lunch or dinner.

Take care,
Maggie

Lily, THANK YOU!! I loved seeing Pat's pictures of the course. Two weeks to go!! :goodvibes Anne

I'd go for earlier, rather than later. I'd love to bea ble to go to lunch with everyone before we go to the 2 pm show, but won't be hurt if majority says otherwise.

Any thoughts on a group breakfast and heading to the expo together? I'm up for it.

FOr those who have not ment me, I'll likely be the one whose dh keeps pulling her down to put her feet back on the ground. ;) I'm so excited!!!! (That whole job thing helps too!)

Since I live here and have no plans that weekend, just about anything works for me. What ever the majority decides.

Do we have an idea of who is arriving on Saturday and what time?

If everyone is coming early, we could probably squeeze lunch in before the play?

Really starting to look forward to meeting everyone. I got the okay from the MD to get back to excercising but suggested I skip my long walk this week. That's fine since I did 9 miles last weekend when I was suppose to do 6, figuring the MD might say that. So if I do 10 next week, I will be right on track for the CDC!

Maggie

Good morning! Just back from my leisurely 8 miles at a 16:30 pace. My ankle gave out at mile 7, which is of concern. I've been trying to do race walking, and I think I'm rolling that ankle (they even explained it in RW this month!). So, I deliberately did not do racewalking this time. Will elevate and ice..REST DAY tomorrow! :cool1:

Maggie, I'm a little concerned about you doing 10 miles the week before the race. You did say this was your first event, right? Five would be great, and you'll be ready to eat up that course! I'm sorry, I don't know what plan you are working with. I know I was freaked out about doing only 10 miles and then tapering for 3 weeks for my first event. But it really does work. Your body is rested and eager to strut its stuff on the course! :rotfl:

Pat, what was the expo like last year? How about the food at the end?

I won't be in Chicago for an early expo meet, or early lunch. But I hope you all want to meet for dinner still. We are driving down early Saturday and I am hoping to get in by 11:00, if traffic cooperates.

If not, I will be waiting for everyone to walk over Sunday morning for the race!!!!

Well darn! My nice long response disappearred!

Ok, the expo is no where as big as WDW's and we didn't spend much time there. The supplies at the end of the race were great! Bagels and bananas and a handtowel with the race logo soaked in ice water! And more than enough for the late finishers.

After much family and health drama I am excited to say that my sister and I are IN!!!!

We very optimistically made our ressies at the Hilton a while ago. I jumped on outstanding DING fares from Columbus ($50.80 roundtrip!!!!! :cool1: ) knowing that they could be cancelled for the credit $ and used for another trip, but some family issues and injury recovery issues had us holding off on pulling the trigger and registering for the CDC until last night.

Yesterday we did a 10 mile race and both determined that we ARE fit enough to do the half. The family issues are still there, but we need some sisterly down time to recharge and regroup.

We probably won't be as fast has last year, but we will be there for the good times (even if not the fastest times :rotfl2: )

Hope to run into some of you in the hotel and of course, at the back of the pack :yay: This will be our 2nd meeting with WISHers as we also did the Minnie in May. My sister, niece and I were the ones in the Minnie baseball hats, black tees and Minnie polka dot skirts! :rolleyes1

Anne, I had been following Hal Higdons walking plan 12 weeks to a half marathon. It does have 10 miles shceduled for the week before the half. I had been concerned about appropriate recovery, especially since I just took a week off after having a laparoscopy last monday. But I am also concerned since I have only walked up to 9 miles at this point.

Advice needed:
I walked 9 miles 1 week ago (last sunday). It was no problem and finished at a great pace. Should I do another long walk before the CDC? Would you experienced walkers give me an idea what I should walk between now and 8/12. I was going to get out and do 45 minutes today. I walked home from work yesterday (55minutes). I do yoga Tues/Fri.

I would love any input, especially since it sounds as if I should be tapering. I am a novice so all advice is welcome.

Maggie

Maggie, if you are feeling well and all is ok...follow whatever plan you are most comfortable using. What does your plan call for you to be doing at this point? Don't make up for missed mileage your 9 miles and good pace report sound to me like you've got it to the finish line for this one.

That said there is nothing wrong with doing more mileage, it depends on the base (overall fitness/running/walking/wogging) you have to draw upon I would say.

If you are looking for some sort of speed record, then you've got to make that call.

Keep on your weekly schedule and make the decision this weekend about that last LR.

With 9 miles and a good pace think about those last 4 miles...do you have enough pace built up to crawl 4 more miles if needed? You can crawl with us at the back if you wait for us since I'm thinking your pace will have you up ahead and it will be a fun easy time as you make it over the line.

I almost forgot: Howard supplied this tidbit of info to me and said I could share if you did not already know...

Chicago Distance Classic gives out technical shirts
I received an email today telling me that LaSalle Bank is going to give out to all participants a technical t-shirt for the Chicago Distance Classic. This is the first time in the 31 years the race has been occurring. The email reads as:

For the first time in it's 31-year history, every participant in The LaSalle Bank Chicago Distance Classic will receive a FREE technical race shirt. "The partnership with Reebok has been fantastic" says Runner's World columnist and race organizer John "the Penguin" Bingham. "They have stepped up in a big way by providing every participant with a high-quality technical shirt. These shirts would cost nearly as much as the race registration fee if you bought one at retail. It's a fantastic deal for the participants."
:yay: :yay: :yay: I am happy with this for sure.

DisneyWalkerGirl, sorry I don't remember your real name I checked our weekly walker/runner thread and don't see it there either. Anyway, I am happy that you will be joining us on the day. I look forward to putting in some steps with you and DSis. Hope it does allow for some destress and regroup time.

Thanks Tiger Lily - my name is Kathy. Except for Dave, I can never remember anyone's name :rolleyes1 I do try - I am just bad at it. :confused3

DW Darcey (DJBounce) and I vote for a lunch. Ginos sounds great at as close as it is to the Hilton, we're thinking of going to the expo, meeting up with everyone and maybe we can head walk over for lunch. Or just meet at Gino's, whatever works for everyone.

Lily,

Thank you for the information. I am certainly not looking for speed. Just to finish. I will listen to my body this last week and see how I feel. Not pushing it so that I am ready for 8/12.

Maggie

Hi, everyone! Sorry I have been MIA, but W/L TO. ;)
We are arriving Friday afternoon and having dinner with a colleague Friday night, or so it looks at the moment.
Would love to do lunch at Gino's with everyone. Can we do that really early? Like 11 or so? I ask for 2 reasons -- figure if for some reason any of the foods don't agree with any of us (God forbid!), the earlier we eat it the better. AND, we are going to the 2:00 matinee of WICKED and I really dont' want to miss the WISH meet luncheon.
I seem to have lost track of things, but is that the gameplan at this point? Pizza for lunch and dinner is still up in the air? Yes, you can call me "Ms. Clueless"

Maggie -- so glad you got some answers here and hoping your body cooperates! :thumbsup2

Anne -- so sorry you are dealing with heel spurs. I had them years ago. The cortisone shot did wonders for me. I hope it brings you quick relief!

BTW, I got in 12 miles Saturday. I did 30 minutes on the bike Monday night and 30 minutes on the ellptical last night. This weekend we will be away but I am optimistically planning to get in 3 miles Friday and 3 miles Saturday and then maybe one more short TM session Sunday when we get home (if I don't have to come in to work). I have no idea how crazy next week might be at work, so I may end up going into the weekend with 5 days of inactivity!

Oh boy it is getting close now!

Gino's for lunch sounds good! DH and I are also going to Wicked so we might need to leave a little early 'cause I hear we have to allow time to buy popcorn from the cart just outside the theather entrance. My DD told me the line for the popcorn is longer than the line to get into the show!!

Just as a reminder - the expo is Friday from 11AM to 7PM and Saturday from 9AM to 7PM.

John Bingham speaks on Friday at 1,3, and 5PM (Coach Jenny follows a half hr the start of John's) and on Saturday at 11, 1, and 3PM. If you've never seen him he is very inspiring and entertaining.

We are having super hot and humid weather now; so that we can get it out of the way before the CDC. I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

Pat thanks for the Expo schedule.

I'm driving to Pat's on Friday. She is graciously offering me a place to sleep.

Looks to me like we want to be at Gino's at 11. I think that would give us all time to order/eat/move on.

I'm then guessing that the Expo thing would be early on Saturday if anyone else is planning on being there early maybe we could get to Ginos from there together.

Dinner is up to discussion yet. I'm waiting for the Wicked crew to finish the theater since I'm planning on driving with Pat & her DH and hopefully Anne and her DH.

While those folks are at the play, if anyone has any plans or want to wander aimlessly I'm up for most anything.

If there is an after play dinner experience I know we'd all love that. Just can't be too late of course. We have to leave the area to get back early enough rest and repeat the trip on Sunday!

Getting exciting!

Cam, I don't think you will have a problem with not putting in the steps for the week. I just WISH that your week is not awful at work.

Don't count us out yet, we may have found a kennel for Hines!!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Keeping my fingers crossed!! I know how hard it is leave furbabies. I waited til my kids were old enough to dogsit for us before we got our retrievers!! One of them is special needs so it is especially helpful that DD and her DH can move right into my house when DH and I are out of town.

Currently we are in day 10 of 12 with the spawn of satan. I thought my XSIL was kidding or exaggerating about her 7 month old choc lab. Silly me, she wasn't!! This puppy is larger than both of my retrievers and she constantly pesters them. She is like the kid on the playground who plays too rough and then doesn't understand why none of the other kids don't want to play. She can be really sweet when she isn't getting into trouble! It's going to seem very quiet when she goes home on Saturday.

Good luck with finding a great spot for Hines!
