I am currently holding 2 car reservations, one at National and one at Avis. The description for each under subcompact car is "Chevrolet Metro" or similar.

Well, I'm not that familiar with this car so I tried to do some research on the internet for it but it appears not to be made anymore. Any ideas on what car(s) National and Avis now have as subcompacts?

The Suzuki Aerio seems to be showing up in some rental fleets, and I beleive that would be in that classification.

Geo makes or made the Metro.

They did up until GM decided to get rid of the Geo brand identity, and merge it with Chevrolet.

Thank you, Chip! I went ahead and sent both National and Avis my question. National's website actually lists the capacity of their economy as 2 passenger so I asked about that as well. In case it helps anyone else, here's the replies:

Avis: Some of the Avis counters still have a few of the subcompact cars left in their fleet. They are slowly weeding them out. When you arrive, if the do not have the Metro available, they will automatically upgrade you to the compact size car similar to the Chevy Cavalier at the same price.

National:
Our SMF location carries in their economy fleet the Chevrolet Metro, Toyota Echo, and Suzuki Swift. This is a 4 passenger vehicle.

if you are over 5 feet tall the metro will be the most uncomfortable car you have ever driven, not to mention it may have a 3 cylinder engine, as a 4 cylinder was a option. on the bright side I think a Metro gets between 40 and 50 mpg, so you won't have to fill up all that often. Hope That helps. by the way Power steering was also a option on the Metro.

Thanks for the info Gclark. I'm 5'3" so I may just fit. ;)

I'm holding these reservations for now and hoping that a good rate on a minivan will come out for our time period.

I used to work in a car dealership and it wasn't well something we advertised but if someone came in and wanted to see a car that they were looking at renting we would more than happlily show it to them, so you might try looking thru the news paper for a used metro at a dealer and go by on a sunday or something when they are closed, give you a idea on size. also I'm looking into renting a car and have found www.mousesavers.com to be very helpful for rental car discount codes saved me about $65 and some change for a week. hope that helps

Umm.... you have a reservation for a SUBCOMPACT but you are hoping for a mini van. I think I see a problem here. Are you even going to FIT in the subcompact.

I don't believe you are going to get 4 adults and their luggage in one of these skateboards. I have a Saab Convertible. In the manufactuer information it says it seats 4 adults. The truth is that at least one of the 4 adults must not have legs! The brochure also says great things about the trunk. My 22" suitcase and garment bag fill it up!

Now you've made me jealous... I've always had a love affair with the 900/9-3 convertible... Too bad it's too hot and sticky down here to have one :( :( :( :( :(

We had a Metro for 2 weeks this spring, when my wife's car was being repaired. Worst car I ever drove. Handled like a boat in pudding. Ride quality was like that of any other Chevy -- if it had an out-of-balance washing machine running in the back seat. Engine noise was low, compared to a 737. Uncomfortable seat, poor fit-and-finish, cheap interior. If it was the only car on the market, I would buy a bicycle.

yah that about describes a metro!

Chip N Dale,

It is NEVER too hot or sticky for a convertible. Just crank the air up and GO! Nashville is pretty hot and sticky. My rule is if it is over the 90 or so at rush hour the top has to stay up. Otherwise TOP DOWN!

I personally think safety is more important than saving a few bucks. I think if you got hit by a bicycle in the Metro, etc., you would get hurt

In two words.....DEATH TRAP.
Broader view of it........stay off the highways, this so called car can barely do the speed limit let alone get out of the way of the bigger faster cars and trucks. Worst rental I've ever had and had no choice since I was in a pinch and it was the last car on the lot. (quickly figured out why!)Savings over safety.........wouldn't do it.

Wow! Thanks for all the input. I'll try to find a good deal on a mid-size car. You have all made a good point about safety. I can deal with a bit of inconvenience but obviously, want to keep my family as safe as possible.

CarolA - it is 2 adults and 2 young kids (ages 6 and 3). I think we would fit in a metro as we will only have one suitcase and a couple of backpacks but I want a minivan as we will be visiting with family and it would be nice if we could use just one vehicle when we went out together.

just to add to comments already made:

A Geo Metro can get to the speedlimit with 1 person in the car, Forget it if you have a grand total of 4 people and 1 Big Bag. 1 more place to look would be www.budget.com as there version of a compact is a ford focus. Wich will give you plenty of room and you'll be able to get plenty of luggage in the trunk. For your family it wouldn't be worth going downsizing to the ranger, for the extra $10 definetly worth the focus. I driven A focus several times and It is a very nice car. event for someone like me at 6 feet! hope that helps.
