its 4am...dh woke me about 1/2 an hour ago saying he's been up for an hour with a horrible pain in his chest/back. I don't know what to do for him! he refuses to go to the hospital, although I finally got him to say he will if it isn't better by 5am. any advice? I just don't know what else to do for him.

Call 911. I am a CCU nurse. He needs to be evaluated.

he wont go. what on earth do you do with someone so stubborn? its 6am now and he's adamant...he's also 200 lbs so I can't phsyically pick him up and take him. he keeps saying its getting better, moving around a bit.

I can't believe he is being so stubborn. I'm at a complete loss here.

if you call 911 there's nothing he can do to change that. Tell him he either goes to the hospital NOW or yuo call 911 NOW. this is nothing to mess around with.

Oh my gosh! Your DH really needs to go to the ER. I know what it's like dealing with someone who is stubborn but I think if it were me, I'd go ahead and just call 911. Maybe when the EMT's show up, they'll have better luck convincing him he needs to go to the hospital. Please keep us posted!

Got any antacids? How old is he? If it were me, I'd have
called the squad and let him argue with them.

okay, he's sleeping now. he took some gas-x we forgot we had (he had bought it for me in case I had problems after my section in march...I had horrible, painful gas after my first). he's swearing up and down that it is his stomach and his back that is hurting, not his chest, and that it is getting better. the fact that he is laying down and sleeping now hopefully means that it was just gas. I know how bad that can get...I've never been in so much pain as after my first section. Not from the section itself, I didn't need more than advil for that, but from the horrid gas pain I developed. he's only 34, so I'm guessing the chances that he its gas are probably greater than if its heart related, although I know things can happen at any age.

I'm so mad at him, and mad at myself. You are right...I should have just called 911. probably still should (its 7:30 now). his mom is in town and will be up soon and I think I'm just going to sic her on him.

Your husband needs to be checked out, even if he is feeling better.

My husband had severe indigestion and refused 911 and refused to go to the ER. I finally convinced him to go to a convenience clinic, at least. They gave him what they called a "GI coctail" and it seemed to reduce the pain.

I asked them to do an ecg and when they did, they not only found that he was having a heart attack but that he had already had another one at an earlier time.

After he was all well, we figured out it was probably when he was in Texas without me. He had a severe bout of indigestion on that trip, too.

There are no age limits for heart attacks--I sure hope your husband will go and get checked out, just to be on the safe side.

I hope he is alright and I'm glad he is able to rest now.

These are classic heart attack symptoms. Also, pain in the back can also indicate things like aneurisms. Remember John Ritter? Please, please call 911 and have the squad come and take him.

I have a couple of friends who are young widows. Heart attacks can and do happen to men in their 20's and 30's. Call 911 and be safe rather than sorry. You know that is the right thing to do. If he gets mad, he gets mad. Better to have an angry husband in the ER with indigestion than a happy husband who died in his sleep. CALL 911!

I hope your husband will go see a doctor about this, even if it turns out to be something minor, pains like that are nothing to mess with. Just yesterday one of my friends, a 28 year old man was admitted into the hospital, he had a heart attack. It can happen to anyone regardless of age. If he won't do it for himself I hope he will go out of respect for your peace of mind.

One word, mtemm, 911. I do hope he gets checked, for the benefit of him, you, all of you. Not to be treated lightly. My son is a FF/PM and he does this stuff for a living, he says lots of people wait too long. Hope all is well in the end.

My Nieces fiance (28) had a heart attack Thursday nite. He didn't feel good all day thursday, Pressure in his chest and back and he was puking and nacious. My niece took him in Thursday nite and they ran some test and found enzymes in his blood and his dr told him he definately had a heart attack. They were suppose to leave next week for his best friends wedding at WDW.

thanks everyone. now he is saying I misunderstood, that it was below his chest and was absolutely gas pains, he could tell because his belly was distended, etc., he's fine after taking the gas-x, etc, etc. he is adament about not going to the hospital. he is due for his annual phsyical anyway, so we are going to make that appt. and talk to his dr. about it and see what he says, and I told him if it happened again I was giving him two choices...we are off to the er or we are calling 911 and he can give them all his arguments, but I'm not listening.

I'm also going to have him read this thread...thank you all for your posts. possibly they will help to change his mind.

My brother died of a heart attack when he was 41.

Come to find out, he had several symptoms in the weeks before like what he thought was gas, pain in the arm or hands, etc.

Our neighbor across the street had a heart attack in July, one week after giving birth to a baby.

My husband's indigestion was not in his chest either, it was beneath his sternum.

My husband had an uncle who died suddenly at age 37. His wife blamed herself for his death (she was an RN) because he complained of indigestion and back pain for several days before he died and she never made the connection with his heart. He left 3 children under the age of 6 years old. Very sad :(

I hope your husband will use some common sense and get checked out. It wouldn't take all that much time. If it was gas then what a relief. If it is actually a heart attack, he could be saving his own life.

Next time ignore him and call 911.

Also, make sure he has adequate life insurance.

mtemm, don't tell him next time this happens you have two choices because if it happens again he won't tell you. Next time this happens you just call 911 , then let him argue with the paramedics.
Just this past easter my friend's husband died from a heartattack , he was 51. He came home complaining of a stomachache , it got worse and he asked to be taken to the ER. He never made it there alive, massive heartattack.
When they arrived to the hospital and checked him out the doctor said he had previous heartattacks , his valves were 95% blocked and there was extensive scarred tissue. He never knew he had heartattacks , he thought the pain was from pulling a muscle or his stomach.
Don't play with that, make sure your husband gets that checked out in his yearly checkup.

These are sounding way too familiar. My husband used to have problems with indigestion and used the pink stuff on occasion. Thought it was irritation from all his coffee drinking, diet, etc. He dropped dead at 38 from a massive heart attack when I was pregnant! The nerve! I guess I'm past the heartbreak of it and am finally angry he wasn't checked out long before. Stubborn men!! The autopsy came back that 3 main arteries were involved...two were COMPLETELY blocked, the third was ninety-some odd percent blocked. And from the scar tissue he had, he previously had a heart attack. I was widowed at 33 with a baby on the way. I wouldn't mess around with it!
