I thought the appetizers were very good - we had the escargots and the onion soup. We did have to ask for aditional dinner rolls for the escargots, thought, and I found this odd as most French restaurants I have been to serve some kind of toast or crusty bread with their snails for sopping up all of the delicious garlic butter.
The entrees were very unimpressive. DH had the duck and said it was cold and bland and the leg was pretty awful (and the breast, from my vantage point, looked overdone for duck). I had the short ribs and they were bland, and served with plain, unbuttered noodles (when a braised shortrib really screams out for a creamier side, like mashed potatoes or yams). I only ate the meat and left the crummy noodles.
The food REALLY screamed out for more seasoning. Black pepper and salt helped, but I expected more herbs and spices instead of the "Morrison's Cafeteria" blandness we encountered.
Also, our server was not very good. We waited forever between the appetizers and the entree, and only about 10 minutes after we had been served, he aldready started asking if we were done & could he remove our plates. Perhaps he was not used to Americans actually putting their silverware down between bites. Anyway, when I actually *was* finished, I placed my napkin on the table to signal I was done and he quickly whisked my plate away.
All in all, it was a pretty crappy birthday dinner and I am glad we didn't bother ordering desserts there and prolonging the misery (we got pastries and coffee at the patisserie instead). Our dinner the next night at Le Cellier was great by comparison, and actually a pretty good meal by any standards.
