ChefMickey123 is Cookin’ Up Another Trip Pre-DxDP Nov 13-21

The Facts, Jack
Casting Call:

Me, ChefMickey123-age 34, Male, Former Chef of 19 Years (Yes, Started Early), C.I.A. Bachelor’s Degree, Now Theological Student, Full-time.

GF: Government Computer Worker, age 27, beautiful, and lover of Disney, like me. Watched two Toy Story Movies as a date with me. Her idea, cool.

ILS: In-Laws, providing roundtrip transportation to/from the Indianapolis International Airport

Mom: My mother, age withheld-participating in one magical day of our trip

GPs: Mom’s Parents, Location, Leesburg FL, Will be joining us for lunch during our trip.

Dining Plan: 7 Night Deluxe, Two Cash Meals at Disney, Two Cash Meals at Universal Studios/IoA

The Hotel: Caribbean Beach Resort, one night a la carte stay, plus Seven Night Package ON THE 40% OFF PIN for the week for a disgusting amount of savings. Standard View-two double beds-(Yes, we are being ‘Good’, theological school, remember.

The Flight: Two Coveted together seats, pre-selected and paid, Non-Stop, Round Trip on airTran from IND to MCO. Could have gone cheaper, but might not have sat together.

Ground Transportation: Disney’s Magical Express, Taxicabs to Universal and back.

And now, the Food:
You will notice a couple of new things in these reviews-first off, there are several meals on this trip which will be paid with cash due to the structure of my 40% Pin. With plane tickets already booked, we could not adjust the dates of the trip-We had previously booked an 8 night AAA package with Deluxe Dining. Our first night was not available on the 40% Pin plan. The cost for one night of hotel, plus one night of Park Tickets, plus one night of Dining Plan was astronomical and would have negated much of the PIN discount, as would have changing our plane tickets.

So, we are still getting a reduced AAA rate for our first night, arriving at MCO early in the day, checking luggage at our hotel and heading to Universal for one of our two days scheduled there. We will be paying cash for Narcoosee’s the first night, and probably ordering way less than we would on the dining plan.
The GF and I spent a lot of time deciding which restaurants to visit on our trip. Hence, there is doubling up of restaurants from last review because she wanted to try it, and some doubled up because I wanted to try it again.

We are currently still in the planning stages of whether or not to join up with relatives at Downtown Disney for lunch at Raglan Road, which would constitute another cash meal at Disney-as if we needed more food.

Please note, I completely refuse to ask for a substitution or a change on a menu item-if I can’t have it, don’t want it, or am allergic to it, I simply circumvent the entire dish and order something else rather than not have a dish the way the chef meant it to be. I realize this is not the case with everyone, and so does Disney-they are more than happy to accommodate guests’ health and religion based dietary requests, dislike of ( or unwillingness to try) sauces, and insistence that potatoes be served with every entrée on the planet. It’s a free country and a small world after all. Do what you like with your food, but I won’t be reviewing too many special orders.

My girlfriend is an “adder”, no- not the snake, as in, “in addition to”, she likes to do things like top a steak with shrimp, etc. She also detests salad, and probably won’t be ordering much of it.

We both like dressing up for dinner, but recognize the right of others to be more casual on vacation.

I like big, heavy, expensive red wines, and Disney does a good job of providing a decent by the glass selection at the signature restaurants. I also like to drink a lot of water, and will often use my dining credit soft drink for a bottle of water or coffee with dessert.

My GF likes pink, sweet wine, Riesling, coconut rum cocktails, Smirnoff Malt Beverages, and Dr. Pepper.

Both of us are making sacrifices in our diet and are adding extra exercise over the next 4 months in preparation for our impending gluttony at the hands of an overgrown rodent in a chef’s hat.

*Denotes a restaurant not tried or reviewed in my previous dining reviews. All 2nd time around restaurants will be re-reviewed in the interest of fairness to staff turnover and occasional bad nights.

Saturday, November 13, 2010
Breakfast: Airport Food
Lunch: Whopper Bar at Universal Studios *
Dinner: Narcoosee’s, Grand Floridian, WDW *

Whopper bar was chosen for its uniqueness and relatively low cost, and happens to be at our location for the day. No, Burger King is not unique, but this presentation of its product line is.

Narcoosee’s, -I hear the view is gorgeous, they sell lobster, and service has a pretty decent rep. I also will not be returning to Citricos anytime soon, and GF was sold on views from Narcoosee’s.

Sunday November 14, 2010
Breakfast: Snack Credits
Lunch: Tony’s Town Square Tavern, Magic Kingdom* with Mom in tow.
Dinner: Flying Fish Café*, Boardwalk, WDW

Tony’s is here based on a recommendation from my sister who simply said, “mmmmmmmm, Tony’s” when I mentioned I was thinking of reserving a table there. My GF also loves Alfredo anything.

Flying Fish Café is here because it is a Signature I have not tried, and is close to Boardwalk for a night on the town.

Monday, November 15, 2010

Breakfast: Snack Credits
Lunch: Teppan Edo, Epcot*
Dinner: California Grill, Contemporary, WDW

Teppan Edo-Onion volcanoes and big sharp knives, nothing more to say.

California Grill-Had a wonderful, near tear-jerking experience here last time-fun atmosphere.

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Breakfast: Snack Credits
Lunch: Coral Reef*, Epcot
Dinner: Spirit of Aloha, 8:00pm Show, Polynesian Resort, WDW

Coral Reef-GF wants to eat near the ‘fish tank’. I have never been here, reviews not good, and I want to see for myself.

Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show-GF loves all things from Hawaii and wants to see it. I have it still fresh in my mind. Remember, you are there for the show, and not the food, which is about “Boston Market” quality roast chicken and ribs. Wine, Beer, and Tips are included…May try a monkey head or hollow pineapple cocktail this time though.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Breakfast: Snack Credits
Lunch: The Three Broomsticks*, Harry Potter Exhibition, Universal/IoA
Dinner: Yachtsman Steak House, Yacht Club Resort, WDW

Three Broomsticks-one of our Universal Days, don’t know really what to expect here as the place does not officially “Open” until tomorrow

A late dinner at one of the nicest, most professionally staffed restaurants awaits us at Yachtsman Steakhouse upon our return from Universal. This is one restaurant at Disney that does everything “the right way” if I can explain it like that. A worthy repeater at my request from last trip.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

Breakfast: Donald’s Safari breakfast, Tusker House*, Animal Kingdom
Lunch: Snack Credits
Dinner: Biergarten, Epcot*
After Dark: MICKEY’S VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS PARTY!*

Tusker House-I cannot, by my own admission, call myself a Mouseketeer without trying out a character meal at least once.

Biergarten, Epcot-Where else should a couple of good midwestern Lutheran kids go for dinner?

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party!-I have never seen the World decked out for the holidays except on TV. My GF did when she flew to Orlando on Christmas Day last year. The decorations were mostly down by the time I got to Downtown Disney with my seminary choir in mid January of 2010.
I hear the Cookies and Hot Chocolate are good, and attraction lines are shorter.

Friday, November 19, 2010

Breakfast: Snack Credits
Lunch: 50’s Prime Time Café*, Disney Studios
Dinner: Hoop de Doo Musical Review*, Late Show, Fort Wilderness, WDW

I was 17 years old when I visited the 50’s Prime Time Café. The menu is now shorter, and sadly, I hear the servers less playful. GF request-I hope to be surprised.

Hoop de Doo Musical Review-A Family tradition I have yet to experience. My Dad’s side of the family (he has 3 brothers and one sister) drove the old pop-up trailer from PA to Fort Wilderness once upon a time before I was born. It is rumored that one of my uncles who was very tough and teenagery at the time had the time of his life when one of the girls from the show sat in his lap and kissed him on the cheek. Due to the P.C. police, this kind of thing probably doesn’t happen there anymore. GF is not looking forward to this one, but we are compromising. I am going to Aloha again, when I would really rather use two dining credits on Artists’ Point.

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Breakfast: Kona Café*, Polynesian Resort, WDW
Lunch: Raglan Road*, Downtown Disney with GPs
Dinner: Jiko, Animal Kingdom Lodge, WDW

Kona Café: I will be ordering Tonga Toast with some sort of pork product, Lilikoi Juice, and Coffee. My fellow DISers make it sound soooo gooood.

Raglan Road-Pub fare outside of the parks my grandparents will actually eat.

Jiko: For the last night, hands down, the best food in Walt Disney World that I have ever tasted.

So Sad Sunday, November 21, 2010-06-16

Breakfast: Snack Credits, Burn up Snack Credits
Lunch: Cinderella’s Royal Table*, Magic Kingdom
Dinner: Airport Food

Cinderella’s Royal Table-GF’s request. I ate here when I was 17 when it was King Stefan’s banquet hall. The food, back then was nothing really to write home about. Generally it was hot and cold sandwiches, Mickey Margarine, and Mouse Ear lemon slices on the water goblets while the servers wore these awful brown leotard serf uniforms-they looked way worse on the guys. I understand since the princesses took over, things are now better.

Happy Eating until next time!

Me first, me first!!!:yay:

Loved your reviews of your last trip...So glad you came back and finished them!:thumbsup2

Hey TxRabbit, YOU ARE #1-but seriously, thanks for being a fan of my last reviews and encouraging me. It was really hard to justify creative writing time at seminary, but I have learned that one cannot be all work and no play-otherwise what good are trips to Walt's World if not to remind us of that.

I am glad I came back and finished. It gave me a sense of accomplishment, plus I had a chance to see that tens of thousands of people had viewed my reviews, which when I started, I never thought might happen, being very new to blogging. When I started up again, I thought the moderators might get mad because I took so long, but I have not heard from them. I'll try and be quicker this time around.

I am going to try and start a regular pre-trip to tell they story of how this trip came to be.

Best wishes and Disney Dreams as you work toward your next trip.

-J

Happy to have found you and looking forward to reading more. I'll have to catch up on your other reports!

Oh, and whatever you heard about Tonga Toast is 1000% true. For the past two years it's been the first thing I've eaten when we arrived, and I don't plan on breaking tradition this year! And lilikoi juice...it's like paradise in a glass. I'm salivating!

Your previous report was one of my faves, so I'm definitely in for your next round! You have a very well-thought out plan. Anyways, the only bummer is that I won't be benefiting from your reviews during our next trip (we go in September). But, I'm sure we'll be back in 2011. I'm already thinking Bounceback!

I think it is great that you hung in for my last round of reviews. They took almost a year to finish. My GF and I very carefully chose our meals together this time around. There were some compromises, but I think we have put together a good plan. A lot of our signature meals will be later in the evening, too, allowing for R&R, cleanup-dressup, and the busses. I spent a small fortune on cabs trying to get to early ressies post park most days when I went in April '09. Of course, this means dinner and sleep most nights, but the average 45min-hour drag home gives time for digestion, and antacid makes a decent nightcap. I also have a young woman with me this time who is not the fastest in the bathroom when it comes to getting ready.:rotfl::rotfl:

I hope you have a marvelous time when you go in September and post your reviews too.

Well, there have been some slight changes in plans.

We discussed it, and decided we both want more signature dining in our trip. Therefore, we will be canceling our reservations at Biergarten and Kona Cafe in order to eat at Artists' Point. While both restaurants are wonderful, after doing the Hoop-de-doo, AND the Spirit of Aloha dinners, we thought the German food, though we love it, is something we can get at home, especially considering Musikfest will be happening in my hometown this August before school starts again. Yes, call us snobs, but, we were both glad we are making this change.

We realize we are missing out on the fabulous breakfast at Kona Cafe, and may go there and just pay for it OOP. That day, we are to eat with my grandparents and Aunt and Uncle for lunch anyway, and they like lunch no later than 12pm-and they want to be eating by then, not ordering.

Which leads me to another change. We are dropping Raglan Road, and may be coming back to it, but, we will be having Pub Food at least once at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal-Three Broomsticks restaurant. I have given my grandparents-the task of selecting the restaurant for lunch. Since it is going to be cash OOP for me, any one will do. Might be a good thing as some of the DTD restaurants don't participate in the Deluxe Dining Plan. Not being on the dining plan also gives us an excuse to go to Ghiradelli's for dessert.

There is one more change-I have secretly switched our first night reservations at Narcoosee's in favor of that restaurant which bears Monarchs' monikers.

I love your reviews I just can't wait til November at least I have a 12 day trip to keep me amused in September while I wait;)

Oooooo...those first night plans are going to be so much fun to read about!

I can't remember what the age limit is there. I've been thinking about taking DS when he is old enough. I recently hooked up the basic cable (I upgraded the internet connection for a mere $5 more a month which also entitled us to get basic cable, which we haven't had, well, EVER, when we did pay for TV back in the day it was motivated by the NFL Sunday Ticket so we had satelite...but back to my story...). DS is absolutely hooked on the Food Network! It shouldn't surprise me given my own interests, but he has really discovered a new found enjoyment in all things food. Looking forward to reading about your experience. It'll help me determine whether or not DS could really take it or not. LOL.

Hey-read some of your 09 dining reviews last night for fun. The minimum age at Victoria and Albert's restaurant is 10. They actually go as far as to say "no one under age 10 will be served" and "there is no children's menu" and "there is nothing casual about our dining room" when you call (and you must call, and leave a message if no one answers) to make your ressie. The kids must also adhere to the much stricter dress code than the rest of the sig dining has. As far as I am concerned, there is no more dress code at signature dining except through peer pressure, which is sad. At least guys can't wear ball caps at signature dining. I was always taught to remove my hat at the table.

Anyhow, if you think your son will like his food "all mixed up with stuff and sauce on it" and you want to pop the $125 minimum plus tax 6.25% and tip-automatically 20%, no contest, for him-GO FOR IT, he will never forget it.

My DS looks for every opportunity possible to wear his suit. He owns 4 ties! I know that people at his school must wonder if I ask him to wear his suit to every school picture (even the casual spring ones and class pictures) but it's not me, it's HIM!!:lmao:

DS is something of a sauce expert. He likes his food to have some sauce on it. He doesn't like plain food. And the Kansas born boy like his meat PINK and JUICY.:goodvibes

As to the price tag, I'm sure there is something comparible in the Houston area and I'd have to do research to see what they charge for the experience. When we dined at the top of the America's Tower (I think it was) in San Antonio for his birthday, the bill was not quite was Q&A would be, but it was close, and I think you would actually get more with Q&A than what we put together for ourselves at that restaurant. When we did the deluxe plan last June, DS enjoyed experiencing all the signature restaurants (especially when he could eat from our plates), so I was thinking that Q&A might be a fun new thing to also associate with a Disney trip.

Thanks for looking into the info for me! I really appreciate it! I have time to decide. LOL.

Subbing! I love how precise your language is in your reviews. No offense to anyone else (writing these updates is not easy, I know from the graveyard that became my first attempt at a dining review), but you really explain what you liked/did not like about each meal. I also know some people who are CIA grads, so you pick up some more credibility with me there. And I absolutely agree with you that people should dress less casually for signature restaraunts. I actually witnessed a child watching a mobile DVD player at Citrico's...SERIOUSLY??? We'll see how it goes when I return with my three year old son this winter! :rotfl:

So, the latest news is that the trip is now officially PAID IN FULL!-4 months out. And I could not be happier-for now I can accumulate the all important SPENDING MONEY, for tips, cash restaurants, cocktails/wine, luggage fees, taxis, and as always SOUVENEARS!! (spelled incorrectly purposely).

Second...The grandparent/great aunt/great uncle luncheon will be held at Fulton's Crab House, Friday afternoon of our trip. It was one of three suggestions by my grandmother. She always orders crabcakes when she goes out to dinner, and she can have one there. I also hear there is a good bar at Fulton's to help cope with the family.

111 Days to Go!!!!!!!!

Hi There! For what it's worth, you really should try to get to the Kona Cafe for breakfast. A veteran server there told me that the Tonga Toast was one of oldest menu items in all of WDW and had been on the menu continuously since park and the Poly opening in 1971! Even if you have to pay cash, I don't think you'll regret it. On our upcoming 8 night stay this November (4th to 12th), I have reservations for 2 breakies at Kona! I've got to have the Tonga Toast AND then I am torn between the Samoan and the Pineapple Macadamia Nut pancakes on my return visit.

I appreciate your GF's affinity for all things Hawaiian, but maybe just hanging out at the Poly will give her enough Island vibes...my DH and I tried the Spirit of Aloha Show on our last visit and it was so very awful! The highlight of the meal was bread - seriously. And the entertainment was ick! Wickedly bad dinner theatre. Very campy. I would NEVER waste 2 precious dining coupons on this again. Ever.

Looking forward to reading your reviews. Have a great trip! :thumbsup2

First Thing is first-My GF and I are now officially engaged. DF received her ring at The Melting Pot, Indianapolis on Saturday Night, and was treated to limousine transportation with pink champagne. She loves her ring.

Now, the Disney Deluxe Dining Plan update. Since we are already engaged, Victoria and Albert's is out for this trip. We will be dining at Narcoosee's our first night in town and paying OOP for it. Later in the week, after much deliberation, since my DF does not care for pineapple or salad, and I don't like broccoli, and we are eating at the Hoop-dee-do already on our vacation, and I have already seen the show (that is a lot of "ands") we will be dining at Citricos that night. I will give them one more chance to change my mind about them (see 2009 Dining Review in link below).

I am highly excited to be going, and so is she. We will be having a Disney World themed reception, and it has been fun shopping for all the little odds and ends this requires.

Packing will soon commence. party:
