I just went for dinner last week after hearing years of negative reviews on the place (apparently I'm a glutton for punishment). I was very pleasantly surprised. It was on par with any of the other Disney buffets I've been to. For me, the problem is that it is so much more expensive than other buffets. If you're interested mainly in food, I would recommend Boma or Biergarten (for buffets), but if you're interested in characters, I thought that Chef Mickey was just as good as Tusker House for dinner, and on par with Crystal Palace. Then again, half of my buffet experience includes dessert and Chef Mickey's had the widest variety and best dessert buffet of any I've been to!

WHen people are trying to determine if a DDP is worth it to them, one of the first questions I ask is where they are eating. If Chef Mickey dinner or Akershus breakfast pops up, I tell them to start adding the cost of meals up. CM is one pricey dinner. I think TH is pretty expensive for breakfast too, but my family really likes it.

We stayed at the Contemporary over Thanksgiving and also felt like we should do Chef Mickeys since we were there. We knew our younger two would enjoy the characters. We had brought our older son several years ago, but never the younger two. We don't really do buffets, and when we do it's always breakfast (Except for Boma and Tusker House). We did Chef Mickeys for breakfast and enjoyed it. The food was hot, fresh and plentiful, but nothing out of this world. Definitely not bad. My only complaint is that the characters were in our section right as we were seated, so we saw them all within the first 5 minutes, before we got any of our food. I prefer to have them spread out during the meal. But that was just bad luck on when we were seated. I wouldn't make a separate trip for it, but I definitely think it was worth since all we had to do was walk downstairs for it!

We also did the Wave for dinner, and while we enjoyed it, I don't understand why it gets so much praise. It was good, but the restaurant itself could have been anywhere. It was just your standard "nice restaurant." And the food, while very good, wasn't anything spectacular like I read.

We had dinner there for my sons bday and the character interaction was the best of all our character dining. I don't remember the food being bad at all. I remember there being lots of choices, buffet was clean and we left full and happy. The other chracter dining we experienced was: Polynesian breakfast, beach club character breakfast and CRT breakfast. Beach club and Poly were disappointing. I would go back to Mickeys again. Disclaimer: we were comped the meal plus special order bday cake because our room wasn't ready until 1hour past check in time at BLT. (First time staying at BLT, rented points, didn't even ask for compensation).A value around $400. That maybe coulda made us enjoy it more!

We had dinner there last year and loved it. Character interaction was top notch and the food was fine. It's buffet food so don't expect gourmet, but there's plenty of options for both adults and kids. I think it's something you have to try at least once.

Our chef mickeys experience was in one word: fun. We took our 2 1/2 year old son who loves characters, and we had a great time. He loved (and so did we when he was done...) the corn dog nuggets from the kids buffet. He also liked the dessert bar. Ha. My husband and I found some food that we enjoyed as well. Again, the meal was more than anything else fun, and not the most memorable cuisine of our trip. We had a 5:30 ADR, and I think her earlier the better. We showed up at 5:15 and had room and the buffet basically to ourselves until 6ish.

We had dinner when we were on free dining - I can't imagine paying the price they ask for dinner has we not been!

I am certainly not a fan of Chef Mickey's. We have eaten breakfast there a total of 3 times, and each experience was kind of disappointing food wise. Our 12 and 10 yr old DD's call it "Chef Icky's". With that being said, we plan on returning for a breakfast ADR this summer, solely so that our 2 yr old DS can see the Fab 5.

Our girls understand that this is for their brother and really only for the characters, LOL. Our expectations are pretty low, so maybe they can surprise us.

I liked breakfast much better than dinner.

We feel the same way. We have had dinner there before and didn't care for it (not sure if it was an off night or what), the next trip we decided to give breakfast a try and we liked it so much better. We are staying at BLT in June and have a breakfast reservation there again .

I am sure my thoughts will be different from most people posting here, but we went last year as a party of 8 for a late night dinner reservation. The experience was AMAZING, and it's the only things my nieces and nephews (and their parents) are requesting we do again this year.

Our server was attentive, and never left a dirty plate on the table. The characters were wonderful, and it being a later reservation, came around multiple times, and spent tons of time with our 4 kids at the table. The food was delicious, and fresh, even with a late reservation. The carved meats, pasta, and salads were some of our favorites.

Honestly, I think Chef Mickey's food can be hit or miss. Go into it with an open mind, that you are there for the wonderful experience for your family...and you can't go wrong.​

When our family went many moons ago ( my son is in college now) we loved the character interaction, but the food not so much. I think that even if you want to do a character meal there are better options.

These are the reasons to go.
I went for lunch on my last trip... the food was bleh but it was a nice break from the heat, and no lines to meet the standard characters.
