Chef and Manager Eating at Chefs de France

Got a question for all of you. We were at Chefs de France recently and had a late ADR. We were still finishing our meal when I noticed a chef and the restaurant manager eating. They had brought plates from the kitchen and sat at an empty table a few tables away from us. Is this routine? Is this acceptable? What do you think? I had never seen anything like this.

I've seen this happen before when we have lingered in restaurants until well past closing time and didn't think anything of it. I guess they have to eat also and touch base about that nights covers so why not do it over some food - at least you know they are willing to eat their food too!! ;-)

It would bother me to see a chef leave his/her restaurant and eat elsewhere.

I'd have to agree with the PP, I'd probably be bothered to see them leave and eat somewhere else. And I'm glad they were out at a table to eat, I wouldn't want them eating in the kitchen where my food is being prepared :confused3

It wouldn't bother me at all to see the manager and chef eating at an empty table. I agree, at least they are eating the food too!

I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with it. I was in one of Emeril's restaurants in Las Vegas and he was eating there. I was glad he thought that restaurant was good enough to eat in himself.

After managing restaurants for the past 12 years I can tell you this is normal. Managers and chefs HAVE to eat and we don't want to eat over the counter or sink or even in the office. We like to eat at tables like everyone else ;)

I think it's kinda cool, actually. Never seen it, but it makes perfect sense for the reasons the PP mentioned.

I also think it's neat and if I really enjoyed my meal or something, I might take the opportunity to go and thank them for a great experience.

Agreed. :)

I think it is totally acceptable. They worked all day or night serving people...they get hungry...the sit down and eat. It's all good. :)

if I saw a chef/manager/waitstaff eating a meal in the dining room:confused3 and I can't imagine why anyone would find that objectionable.

Can I just tell you all that the manager at Chefs is hilarious!!!! I love that guy!!!!

Not the same at all, but I was at Sonic a few weeks ago and several employees left through the back door. They drove off and returned about ten minutes later... with Dunkin Donuts coffees!

Doesn't speak well for Sonic's own coffee... ;)

1) CM's are not supposed to eat on property and in public (aka, on-stage).
2) UNLESS they have removed their costume.

Scupp,

I can remember not only the managers...but the entire staff of Bistros and Cafes in Paris taking turns eating at unused tables during meal times....particularly dinners...even the guys working the crepe stands on the streets would make them for themselves and experiment when nothing was going on....

Why shouldn't they? They all enjoy life and food and have low body fat percentages within their ideal weight brackets....

It could kinda be an homage to France in the case of Les Chefs....or perhaps they just think it makes sense to enjoy the food (a very French thing) and not adhere to a corporate structure that calls for maximum pricing and exploitation of consumers by employees on the lowest possible pay scales....

...just a theory;)

We had the same thing occur except it was at opening for lunch; DH and I were seated at a great table by the window, served our drinks and then asked to move 2 tables away from the window by a very embarrassed waitress. Taking over our table was a chef and a woman; we were not happy but it didn't ruin the meal. There were numerous open tables around us. :confused3 We don't go back unless friends want to go.
