On a recent mother/daughter trip, DD and I visited Storybook Circus to take pictures with some characters. While in line to take pictures with Minnie Mouse, we noticed she was clearly pissed off and complaining to the Photo Pass CM about something. I’m guessing she needed a restroom break or her work shift was over. Her body language was totally off-balance with her costume. My DD is a CM, therefore, she understands quite well, the demands of these types of job. DD went ahead and took pictures with disgruntled Minnie, but I stayed back because at that point, I felt as if I was being a bother.

Has anyone ever encountered a not so happy character at WDW?

If you were already in line you taking pictures wouldn't have been any bother. If she needed a bathroom break or it was the end of her shift she should have just signaled her handler and they would have figured something out.

I have had some rather interesting conversations with face characters. Never disgruntled but some of them sounded like they were high.

Donald sometimes acts "disgruntled" when his line is short over there or if you say Mickey is #1 but that is part of his character.

If you've ever met the Frozen sisters, you'll know that there is always a backup with Elsa but many times Anna ends up standing around and/or stalling with the family she's with to slow the tide toward Elsa (if Anna is meeting first). The first time we met Anna & Elsa, Anna was first in the room, then Elsa. We had an AMAZING interaction with Anna, probably our #1 character experience ever. Last time we met them, their order was reversed with Elsa first. Walked up to Anna expecting to be Wow'd again (even though it was a different "friend")...and the experience totally fell flat. She cut off what the kids were trying to say to her, was just giving generic, "Uh huh, yeah, uh huh" and literally led them straight out the door as soon as a picture was snapped. I'm not sure she said an actual word to our kids. It really wasn't necessary because the group behind us was still oohing and aaahing over Elsa even as Anna pushed us out the door. Literally.

There are a number of things that may have happened to make Minnie not so happy.

Guests often attempt to knock off Minnie's, Mickey's, and other friends' heads during their meet. If the Attendant or Photopass miss the incident especially when they are supposed to be protecting the characters, it could result in the unhappy interaction you witnessed. Male guests often slide their hands up Minnie's dress or attempt to find zippers that are on her costume. These events do result in upset characters as well as injured characters.

You'd really need to be watching all the preceding meets to determine why Minnie was upset. Coming offstage only occurs at the end of a set - characters don't ask to come offstage unless they become ill or get injured thanks to disrespectful guests.

People are awful...that's really sad.

Wow! I guess you have to walk in a character's shoes to see just what they have to put up with day in and day out. My DD is a CM and she comes home with some very interesting stories!

There have been instances where law enforcement has been called. But, it is Disney and the guests are "always" right. What's worse are the kids who kick, punch, and tackle the characters and their parent(s) just laugh.

Let's not forget that guests also tend to spin things when you try to turn them in. There was that one family whose son was chocking Pluto at Disneyland to the point that the CM started swinging to get the kid off because he was on the verge of passing out. The family sued Disney for the CM assaulting their son when they started it!

Do Male guests really try to get lewd with Minnie? It is my understanding that the "friends" of the head characters could be male or female anyway, not that either is an excuse for such poor behavior.

My friend is a CM at DLP and she said it's worse there. When she was Minnie/Daisy's friend, they would grab at her chest and lift up the skirt. She was so glad when she switched to being a parade performer so she wouldn't have to deal with it anymore.

If you're dumb enough to feel up a character, I think that you're probably too dumb to realize that the character performer underneath the suit might not be the same sex as the character they're portraying.

Also, the height limits to be a "friend of" the mice are low enough (max of 5'2") that almost all the character performers portraying both Minnie and Mickey are women.
