My DD6 has her competition on Sunday. :cheer2: Her coach told us to put her hair in a high pony tail then use sponge rollers. So here is my question: do I need to put gel in her hair before I roll up each litttle section? So the hair looks crisp or do I just roll it wet and use hairspray when I take the rollers out?

My daughter cheered for years and here's what worked for us:
Don't wash her hair. It works better if the hair is a little dirty.

Don't put it up wet. Gel works okay, but we always use Freeze It hair spray. It's really strong, but it works great.
Get the smallest rollers you can find, and don't forget the end papers. After you put it up in the pony tail, use a rattail comb to separate the hair into small sections, Spray the section "generously" with the freeze spray, roll it up tight. After all the hair is rolled up give it another good spray. This has worked for us for years. You will probably need to wash your hands midway through because the spray will literally make you hands hard and sticky.
Good Luck to you and your daugher.

Hope this helps. :cheer2:

Thank you so much! I got her the blue sponge rollers they were the smallest the drugstore had. I will look for "Freeze" and pick up some papers too. Thanks again, now I just need to find silver eye shadow. :)

I just did my DD's hair last night as a trial run with rollers. I used rollers that are long and straight that just bend. This way you get a better spiral curl. I usually use a spiral curling iron to curl her hair but our competition tomorrow is a 2 hr. drive!! My youngest DD wears her hair half up half down in spiral curls.............My oldest wears it straight half up half down!! Yahoo for that one!!

I use Got 2 B Glue hairspray!! I spray a small section of her hair and then wrap it. Most definetyl use end papers with rollers!! Don't want those frizzies!! Do not use get before you roll them...........it only weighs them down and keeps them somewhat wet. Roll on dry hair sprayed with hairspray for the best curls................roll slowly in a spiral fashion!!

you can PM me with any quesitons and I can email you a picture of my youngest with her hair curled using the spiral curling iron which I think produces a much better look.............but ony if you have the time!!

Good luck to your DD tomorrow..... :cheer2:

I don't know how many competitions your daughter is in but when my daugher cheered we needed to buy certain makeup and colors which were not cheap. We decided to collect money from all the moms and buy it all at the same time from the same place and the kids shared. The only thing they didn't share was lipstick and mascara for obvious reasons. But we needed red lip glitter to put over the lipstick and it was $25 a jar and the eye glitter was also expensive.

I agree with plutolvr about the makeup!! It can get expensive and I split with others at times and we bought our own applicators. We now get our make up through our gym and all have the same kind which makes it easy but it is not cheap!!!

Try Claires, Target or Walmart for silver shadow and as a last resort Sephora!!! Does it need to be glitter or just matte? Target has some glitter but not sure about Silver....Claires may be a better choice...........

Hopefully see you and other DIS cheer mom's around the cheerleading comps someday!!!! Good luck to all your girls/boys!!

I have to use rollers. We have a 2 hour drive too. My dd will fall asleep in the car so I have pictures in my head of flat hair. As for makeup my DD is the oldest at 6 so they are going on the lighter side. This competition has a no glitter rule. I was a tomboy growing up so this world of cheer is so different to me.

Just wanted to echo what everyone said - we used the white perm rods, though. Definitely need the rolling papers - otherwise, it hurts to take the rods out!! We tell our parents - the more curling rods, the better. I get about 36 rods in my daughter's hair.

Our competitions don't allow make-up or glitter at all - so I can't help you there!
