Morning!
It's Friday! Yeah! I'm ready to go home! Only 8 hours and 15 minutes left!
I would like to do a 1/2 marathon if I could ever get myself in shape. Maybe I'll work on a goal for 2009. We'll see.
Just do it. No day but today. (Nike & "Rent" - what a combination)
We've been walking / jogging regularly for more than a year now. It was a New Years resolution in 2006 to each other that we've actually kept. We pretty much were just honest with each other and ourselves. Neither of us really expects to be celebrity-fit or to fit into those clothes from high school again. Last night we jogged two miles (we were going for 2 1/2 but the weather didn't cooperate). It's taken us more than a year to work up to it (Cherie has bad ankles / knees to do too much jogging). We're not doing Ironman-type workouts - just a bit every couple of days (30 minutes to 45 minutes every workout). We do 3 or 4 workouts a week. Our target is 4 workouts - if we drop below 3 we must have a REALLY good excuse - "I just don't feel like it" only cuts it for one skipped workout. We're tough with each other on that. We usually workout together - when the weather's crappy we have a bunch of Leslie Sansone walk/jog DVDs that we do.
Neither of us has REALLY lost any weight to speak of, but the weight we do have is very gradually shifting to less fat, more muscle (she's lost about 10lb - I've lost about 5lb). We're eating healthier, but not absolutely cutting out our guilty-pleasure foods (mine is fried chicken in general, KFC in particular - I eat there once every month or so - hers is Mayfield full-fat & butter ice cream). When we do McDonalds (which is 1-2 a week) I get a salad (very little dressing - I usually dip my fork in it and that's about it) or a Happy Meal if I feel like a cheeseburger. I try to stop the urge to completely clear my own plate (I'm bad about that, and I eat whatever the kids don't eat, on top of what I am served). If I'm not hungry anymore, I try to stop eating. Sometimes I'm good at it, sometimes not - but as we keep sticking to this it does become easier to achieve. We do stop for our Chick-Fil-A fried chicken biscuits breakfasts just about every morning, but I think that's our only true daily vice. We could cut those out to be healthier, but in the grand scheme of things - it's all good.
Our biggest problem is still snacking while we're hanging around the house. To fight it, we try to make each serving a bit smaller than the one before - when we started we were eating entire bowls of ice cream - 4 or 5 scoops. I was scarfing down a half-bag of tater chips at each sitting. Betcha can't eat just one... So I switched to Baked Lays. I prefer Baked Lays & Baked Cheetos now over the full-fat kinds. And I stopped eating so many at each snacktime - and continued to eat less with each snacktime. Now I eat a handful at a time and I'm good. Heck yeah, I cheat sometimes - but it's once every two or three weeks. And when I do cheat, the quantity of food doesn't even come close to what I was eating before. I also love fruity sweet candy. I used to pop Skittles & jelly beans like they were candy. Now, I eat those little fruit snacks instead of candy - one (sometimes two) little packet and I'm good. We have lots of fruit around the house now. We still end up throwing a lot out, but it's getting better. When we go to the movies we'll still get the buttered popcorn and the box of candy, but we share them (and we only go to see movies about once a month or two).
I DO feel better everyday. I have those 'get-up-in-the-morning' pains still, but they're not as bad before I was active-ish.
OK. That's as preachy as I'll get.
