Cheddar cheese on apple pie????

I have never melted the cheese ON the pie--and that does not sound appetizing to me, but I do like a slice of sharp cheddar on the side with apple pie.

My parents are from MI and so of course I have heard of it. My mom would always eat her pie with cheddar. I don't eat it though.

Why do some people serve cheddar cheese with apple pie?
The practice of combining cheese, fruit, and nuts dates back to ancient times. These were often served at the end of a meal because they were thought to aid in digestion. From the earliest days through the Renaissance, the partaking of these foods was generally considered a priviledge of the wealthy. This practice was continued by wealthy dinners composed of many courses up until the 19th century. Apples and cheesemaking were introduced to the New World by European settlers. These people also brought with them their recipes and love for certain combinations. This explains the popular tradition of apple pie and cheddar cheese in our country

Yup - its YUMMY.

I think my grandpa started the tradition in our family. He is East Coast-Canadian (family originally English, then emigrated to Nova Scotia, settled in Massachusetts). I can remember this being the "right" way to eat apple pie in our famiy from when I was very very small.

We use one of those cheese-slicer thingies to slice of a couple of very thin slices of cheddar cheese, then re-heat the pie if it is cold, lift up the top crust, put the cheddar on top of the hot apple filling, then put the crust back on. let it sit for a few minutes to warm the cheese, and eat!

I would imagine it's probably an acquired taste though. :)

As my Gran used to say: Apple Pie without Cheese is like a kiss without a squeeze!

My mom used to have a vintage sample hanging in our kitchen with this embroidered on it, so this isn't a new idea...

I like a sharp white cheddar cheese sliced with a granny smith apple. I have never tried the pie/cheese combo (I don't like pie), but it doesn't seem that odd to me.

I've heard of it but never tried it. As someone else mentioned, I love apples dipped in cheese fondue. But then it's just the pure crisp apple with cheese. You get a bit of sweet, and a lot of tart and savory. It's delicious! :goodvibes
But there's just something about the idea of the added sweetness and cinnamon, etc of a pie that just doesn't seem to go with cheese. It might be lovely, but I've just never been able to bring myself to try it.

Actually I think the tradition goes way back, this isn't something dreamed up any time recently. I love it, and I put quite a slab on my apple pie and heat it up so it melts down the sides. Good stuff.:)

I absolutely love cheese on apple pie! I've eaten this my entire life.

I don; think my father has had it any other way - and I prefer it to ice cream!

Many, many recipes combine cheese and apples.. Can't say I've ever tried it yet, but I have tons of recipes for all sorts of things where apples and cheese are among the ingredients..:santa:

yep..gotta have sharp cheddar with apple pie.

Ducking back in to say that you don't really notice the sugar & cheese. What you notice is the crust and apples. I can undertand why people think sugar & cheese is gross, but with the sharp cheddar it's really good. When in doubt, a scoop of ice cream is great on apple pie, but probably omit the cheese with that.;)
