Checking Car Seat Question

It's been posted many times on Dis boards that there is no fee to check a car seat for a flight. I assume this means checking at the counter (with your luggage). But what happens if the airline "loses" the checked car seat?

Isn't it 'safer' to bring the car seat through the airport and check it at the gate? Is that allowed? The last times I've flown with kids we've used the car seat on the plane, so I haven't had to check it. Now my kids are old enough that I don't need the seat on the plane, but will need it in the rental car.

TIA.

Gate checking is just as free as checking at the gate. And is safer for the poor seat, as there's less opportunity for it to get banged and smashed around.

Just give yourself a bit more time to get through security, in case it doesn't fit through the xray opening and has to be checked by hand.

I flew a few months ago with 2 car seats on Delta (one infant one booster) I told the guy checking my luggage that i'm not going to be able to leave the airport without these carseats so its IMPERATIVE they arrive at my destination (had a layover) The guy stuck a priority sticker on both carseats. The flight back home they didnt (united) but they arrived just fine
