Of really sure this is the correct place to ask this but is glitter hairspray safe to out in checked baggage? We need it for MNSSHP but I can do without it if it's not allowed. I know I can't put it in carry on bags. Anyone know?

Sure. Best thing is to put it in a ziplock bag, maybe even double bag it in case it leaks.... we do that with our shampoos and stuff....

check tsa.gov

I found this: Aerosol (any except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities) not allowed in either carry on or checked. You may carry liquids, gels and aerosols in your carry-on bags only if they adhere to the 3-1-1 rule: containers must be 3.4 ounces or less; stored in a 1 quart/liter zip-top bag; 1 zip-top bag per person, placed in the screening bin. Larger amounts of non-medicinal liquids, gels, and aerosols must be placed in checked baggage.

Good and confusing, eh?

I found that and it left me more confused than before. :) are two cans of glitter hairspray considered personal care items in limited quantities? What about three cans? Seems like it depends in the mood of whoever is screening my checked bag that day, right? It's all so crazy. I hate flying. We drive everywhere, but we got a really good deal on flights that actually makes it cheaper than driving. So.... I was now stuck wondering about crazy things like glitter hairspray!

Hair spray is considered a personal care item.

A good source of info is seatguru.com, that lists each item separately. By reading it, you will get an idea of the difference between personal care proeucts and the unacceptable aerosol can items.

I packed aerosol air Freshener in our checked luggage last time we flew. It was removed from our luggage by TSA with a note that said it was not considered to be a personal necessity. Personally I think it was. They must have never been in a hotel room, in Florida on day 7 at disney with 3 boys in the room! Things can get a little stinky, especially if you haven't gotten the laundry done yet! They, also obviously opened all of the aerosol items....sunblock, to do something....maybe test them, because they were empty when we got to Disney and our suitcase had to be thrown away. So, whatever you do...put them in a Ziplock!

I don't think they consider it a personal necessity because.....it's not. It's preferred, not necessary. If it was some sort of prescription or a medical apparatus that would be different.

Air freshener is a cleaning product; not a personal care product.

I also would not take anything that would compromise the next person staying in the resort room; I.e. anything like air fresheners that could cause severe allergies or asthma attacks for someone else.

I have packed glitter spray for competitions and have never had a problem yet.

Since you said you can do without, I would just go ahead and pack it. If it is there when you get to your destination, bonus. If TSA has removed if, not such a big deal since you can do without.

Between ice skating, beauty, and dance competitions, I cannot imagine them not allowing it in checked baggage. Glad you chimed in!

It is, indeed, very confusing. But, then again, I wonder if glitter hairspray is a personal care item. I don't use hairspray with or without glitter, so, I am not your best source. I hope you find an answer to this. :)

As far as allowed/not allowed for aerosol products:

If it goes ON your body, it is a toiletry and allowed in checked baggage.

If it does NOT go ON your body, it is not a toiletry allowed in checked baggage.

This is why hairspray of any type is allowed, but your can of Renuzit air freshener is not. The Renuzit can't (well, shouldn't EVER) go on your body.

I do work for TSA.

Thank you for breaking it down; I could not determine the way to explain the difference between a personal care product and a cleaning product.....like Febreze.

I just went to Walmart and bought a can when I got there!!!!

But if you do not have a car, why go to Walmart; she got the correct answer. She can pack it in her checked baggage.

I accidently put it in my carryon. I knew I shouldn't but I just put all the costumes in the carry on. It was in a bag in a bag in a bag and i completely forgot. Yep carryon was opened and confiscated, My bad! Dang that stuff is expensive! lol.

We took two cans last year in the checked bags, and made it there and back with them.

Thanks so much! Good to hear from people who have packed it. I know hairspray is allowed but glitter hairspray isn't quite the same and I wasn't sure where it fell on the lists I read. The explanations make sense.

We aren't renting a car plus I scored these cans for 25 cents at an after Halloween clearance sale so I'd hate to pay full price. On the flip side, if they were confiscated, I'm not out much money! :)
