Check out day at AKL, can we still hang around the hotel?

You don't need to leave the grounds when you check out. Anyone, even someone not a resort guest, can go to the resort to visit, look around and see the animals. You could probably even still use the pool since you just checked out that day. Especially if you have late flight or something. The only thing you'd have to do is ask for them to store your luggage until you leave.

You can still use the facilities at Animal Kingdom Lodge until you need to leave for the airport. Store your bags except for your swim stuff and you'll be fine. You can still use the pool for the remainder of the day.

Hi...I'm sure you guys will know this...if you arrive before check-in time can you leave you luggage in a secure place and have a wander? Or would they let you check-in a bit early?

You can check in when you arrive. If your room is not ready, bell services will store your bags. I think they will send them to your room when it is ready. You can head to the parks, the pool, whatever.
