Check my understanding of cancelling please!

I may have to cancel my Thanksgiving reservation - I know I have to cancel 30 days before the check in date to get the points back as non-holding points(correct?), however the points used were all 2008 April UY, except for 92 which were originally 2007 points I banked into 2008. I could bank the rest of the points, but those 92 points I will have use or transfer/rent before March 31, 2009, or I lose them, correct? I or the person they transfer to must complete their stay with these points before 3/31/09?

And I can't rent the reservation unless I wait until the 30 days before check in , right?

If you cancel 31 days or more before your arrival, the points would go back into your account. The 92 2007 points would expire 3-31-09. The 2008 points could be banked. If you wanted to rent them, there would be no restrictions on how many days ahead you could book.

If you cancel 30 days or less, they all would go into holding. All would expire 3-31-09. You could only book a new reservation (or rent) 60 days before arrival.

Regarding the 30 days, are you talking about the DIS board rule for posting an exisiting reservation? That's not a DVC rule.

First, you need to cancel 31 days or more before date of arrival to avoid holding account, not 30.

Second, the points already banked into this year cannot be banked again and must be used for a trip that ends by March 31, 2009. Moreover, the points cannot be transfered. To rent, you would have to use them yourself to make a reservation in another's name.

Third, if you are talking about rules for renting on this site, my understanding is that you cannot make a specific ressie for a room and time and then try to rent that ressie on this site until 30 days before the reservation date. However, you can say even now that you have points available and are willing to rent and then agree to a time with the renter once you have one and make the ressie. The restrictive rule does not apply to that situation; it is designed to prevent someone from booking, say, rooms for Christmas time, and then at 7 months out, when no one can get a ressie for that time, offering to rent those already made Christmas reservations.

You must cancel no later than 31 days from check in to avoid having the points go into holding. If you cancel 30 days to 1 day from check in the points will go into the holding account.

You are correct that the 92 banked points can be used for stays through March 31, 2009. You cannot transfer them however because banked points cannot be transferred. You could use the points to make a reservation for someone else.

If you decide to pick some dates and make a speculative reservation that you will then try to rent on the DVC Rent/Trade board, you cannot offer that reservation until 30 days from check in. But you could post a "Points for Rent" thread at any time and use the points to make a reservation for someone else. The "30 day rule" applies to the use of the DISboards to rent an existing reservation.
