Quickie for you folks...is it possible to check in first thing in the morning to get your hotel keycard (for ride access) and then come back later on to find out your room allocation???

Absolutely. That's the way most of us do it.

Yes, the best idea is to arrive the hotel at 7am and attempt to check in.
If the room isn't ready, leave the bags with the hotel, or in your car. Head over to the parks, and hopefully they'll call your cell phone around noon. That's what happened with us on our recent visit. If the room isn't ready by noon, then change cloths and head to the pool.
