I'm a seasoned cruiser, but fairly novice at the parks. Just got back from a wonderful weekend at AKL, EPCOT and MK.

What is that strange finger reader you have to use when you put in your ticket at the turnstyles? What does it do?

It is a finger scan used by annual passholders to identify that the person listed on the ticket is the one using it. When you first get your ticket you take it to the gate and they do an initial finger scan. You basically put your second and third finger in and squeeze two rubber prongs. It scans the measurement and records it in the computer for your next visit in a park.

Ah, so it's just for annual passholders. That makes sense. Didn't need to do it anyway! :)

Thanks for the info!

Actually we usually get military discount tickets from SOG and this year got the military salute tickets. We also had to do the finger scan. I don't know what it is about me, but I always have problems with it. They tell me I'm doing it correctly, but I always get the big red "x". I even had to get a ticket reissued in mid-trip, although that didn't end up helping anyway. They just have to punch a few extra buttons and then let me in, but I hated holding up the line every time.

When we went this past September 1st trip for my DM she had a very hard time with the "biometric finger scan" due to the fact that she has arthritis in her third finger. We tried everything to try and get that finger to scan..but each time she had to pull out the old ID to prove who she was.... :earsboy:

It is a biometric scanning device for annual pass holders. It is pretty interesting technolgy.

Oh, thats what its for! I thought it was some sort of torture device, as it HURTS when I stick my fingers there!

How come they can use something like that at Disney World, but they can't put one at the airport to catch terrorist coming in country?

That certainly would be a good idea. The problem is that the biometric scanners used at WDW are not as accurate as those that would be used to accurately identify people. That would be very expensive technology.

I love (and hate) when guests just stick their fingers into the readers when they don't need to, just because the person in front of them did. WDW is a fascinating place to observe crowd psychology.

I totally feel for everyone who has a hard time with it! I talked to guest services about it, and apparently my fingers are a part of the 1% of the population that change enough overnight for the photo to not be accurate from one time to another. I just go ahead and get my ID ready, because I know it's not going to work. I try, they fix my fingers, and it doesn't work. It's odd, but hey, 1% is technically a lot, so....oh well! We're special!

The terrorists purposefully don't squeeze together all the way on the initial scan.

My husband and I had to do the finger scan last year, and we are not annual passholders.
