Long story short, we had to move to West Virginia without our border collie. :sad2:

What is the cheapest way to get him here? Can dogs even fly alone?? Please help us get our family member here with us....

Contact airlines about their transport policies and their rates. It won't be cheap though. You can check this website for a summary of different airlines http://www.petflight.com/airlines.

Our dogs our a big part of our family. If it were us we would drive them.

Dogs can fly on some airlines in the baggage section. They must be in a crate. One of the hard crates. I had to send a dog to a friend in a similar situation but this was from SC to Oregon. One issue is some airlines require the flight to be a direct flight. So I had to drive 3 hours to Charlotte and the receiving side had to drive to Seattle. It was expensive. You need to weight the dog in the crate to get the poundage weight. Remember it is dog in crate not just the dog. We made that mistake when estimating the cost. Also make sure to find out about the rules about food and water. I think we had to have an empty water bowl hooked to the bars of the crate. That way they could give the dog water if necessary. I think we had to buy one from the airline. It is possible but there are lots of rules. Just look into it and decide if it is better than a weekend road trip. Across country drive was not possible. Actually they had planned to but one of the family members had to be hospitalized so everything had to change.

Good Luck in reuniting with the pup.

Ten years ago we bought a pekingese from a woman in Minnesota who rescues albino pekes. She had our pekingese flown from Minneapolis to Cincinnati and it was fine. There were considerations for her snub nose but that doesn't seem that it would be an issue in your case. So dogs can fly alone.

In your case though, I would drive the dog.

Many of the bigger boarding kennels handle transporting pets, making flight arrangements and getting required health documentation. I'd check with a few in Texas and if nothing else they can probably direct you to someone who has expertise in this.

Summer is a tough time to fly pets because of the high temps. Airlines won't transport pets when the temperatures exceed their high/low temperature limits. Not sure what they are but you can probably find the specifics on airline websites.

Good luck!
