cheapest place to get traveler's checks?

I'm concerned about carrying a lot of cash and would like to get some traveler's checks in addition to my disney dollars and debit card.

I don't want to pay a lot in fees.

We always got ours at AAA, no charge for members.

Check with your bank. They sometimes offer them free if your accounts are a minimum balance.

Our credit union started charging, so we always drive over to AAA to get them now. As mentioned above, no charge for members.

Most places that do charge only charge 1 %, which is not a huge amount.

We also get them at AAA. It's one of the many reasons we are glad we belong to AAA.

We just got back from a vacation last week, and we use travelers checks every time we vacation. We were really disappointed at some of the places how hard it was to use them. One Shell station said they could not take them at all and Sam's Club made my husband sign some sort of paper stating that he was who he was. I am guessing travelers checks will be phasing out? But I like to keep track of my vacation money how much I spend each day, and it seems so risky just to carry cash.

I was going to get travelers checks from AAA but I am opting for their new travel card which has a VISA logo on it and you use it like a debit card. Each one can have up to 9,999 on it. Only 4.95 to activate...........I am happy

The problem with this is. Sometimes the companies swipe the card to verify the amount on there, which can put a hold on the amount of your card. This hold can take 10 days to come off, effectivly keeping you from using your money. I perfer travlers checks even if they are harder to use.

They are very easy to use at WDW, I've never even been asked for i.d. and they take them at every store, kiosk, snack stand, etc. just like cash.

Once, about an hour after I got off the plane, I lost my travelers checks. What a way to start a vacation!!! It was just like in the commercial. They were replaced within hours. I love them. I can budget better than with a card. I have never had a problem cashing them. Usually, I cash what I think I will need for the day at the front desk. Off site I may need to show ID, but even that isn't an issue. I get mine at the bank no charge.
