I just did a quick search and the cheapest airfare from the midwest to Honolullu, Hawaii was $800 flying united. Does anyone know of a cheaper airline or some trade secrets to get to Hawaii cheaper? Thanks.

Try booking a layover in LAX.

My dream Aulani trip is either having a 3 or 4 night stay in DL at the front or backend of a week in Hawaii.

I had it down to $650 a person by booking a flight from O'Hare to LAX, then LAX to Honolullu, then doing the same in reverse on the way home.

You can search for last minute deals but that doesn't work well with DVC reservations. Historically $800 roundtrip isn't a bad price from MSP, but then we are so dominated by Delta that we don't often get great deals. Sometimes charters have a little cheaper rates. We used to only do non-stop but now we actually prefer a stop so we can get out and stretch.

I use farecompare.com but yeah, $800 is on the high side but not overly high. Sign...the only big negative to living out here....it's SO expensive to get back to FL to visit family and see Mickey!!!!!

Yeah, I don't think $800 is bad. For us, we would fly Allegiant Air out of Des Moines to LAX. Then LAX to Hawaii.

we can usually find Allegiant out of Des Moines to LAX for anywhere from $19 to $99 one way.

Try breaking up the flight like others have said!

That's rather not bad from the midwest. I'm leaving next Wednesday and I paid slightly more than that for Delta direct out of Detroit. But had to go with a Q coach vs. Y coach fare to be able to use my miles to upgrade to 1st class.

CO/United had a $481 direct out of Newark sale a few weeks ago.

For any airfare, I set alerts on Kayak, I follow FLY DTW, airfarewatchdog on Twitter.

Actually I got that sale figure via Twitter.

Just be careful because I don't think you can do the layover AND fly in to one airport and out of another BOTH.

If you stay on one airline you can. Over at AA.com (american airlines) you can book a multicity trip. I've rigged it either by a stop over in LAX on the way out, on the way back, AND both. It all works out around the same cost.

Now if I broke the airlines up (flew say southwest from chicago to LAX, then AA from LAX to Honulullu, then AA from Honulullu to Chicago) I could get tripped up rather easily.

I'm paying a little more than $800 to fly from the midwest in September (MLI/Quad-Cities IA/IL) to SNA (Orange County Calif) for a 5 day Disneyland trip (VGC) then LAX to HNL, and finally HNL back to MLI. (All on Delta).

Also, I would never use one airline to California and a different one to Hawaii unless I included at least a day or two California stop-over. With one airline, you're protected in case of delays, cancellations, missed connections, schedule changes, etc. With multiple airlines, you're not.

$850 doesn't surprise me as I HAVE in years past seen fares in the $1,200 range from the east coast - but if it's just a RT to / from HNL that seems high for a straight RT. I just went to kayak.com & plugged in a Sat. departure from BWI to HNL. Stay a few days there then an inter-island hop to Maui for a few nights. Then depart from Kahului to LAX for 3 days then finally back to BWI. The cheapest deal is popping up on Amer. Air for just under $900. On the way over it goes thru DFW (Dallas/Ft. Worth) in 12 hours (THAT is the fastest time you can get from the east coast and provides only a minimal layover of about 45 min. at DFW). AA is our 2nd choice behind Delta to use for our trips to Hawaii because we like to use Skymiles. Airfare is one reason we only go to Hawaii every 5 years.

If you think $800 is high try pricing flights to Europe!! We're doing one of the DCL Med cruises in 2011 with a few days in Paris before hopping to Barcelona...it is looking like I will need to budget close to $1,100 ea. for the airfare portion. On a good day maybe I'll catch a deal for closer to $1,000.
