Help! I am desparately in need of new tires but only plan to keep my car for about the next year (177k miles) while we get debt free and refinance.

Where can I get the cheapest NEW tires - I don't need them to be Goodyear or anything special. thanks.

If you have a small local mom & pop type of place, check there first. Some of them sell tires cheaper than the chains. I know ours does, and we get much better service.

Check tirerack they will ship to you and then you just need to get them mounted somewhere. They recommend a few places based on where you live.

We have also used this company. In our case my DH did the installation. The prices were good.

We have used tirerack before and they were good, but this year we ordered both sets of tires for our 2 cars from Tirebuyer and they had free shipping so it was a much better deal and we got the tires within 2 days of ordering them.

I've found that even paying the installation fees it still works out cheaper. Even better if you have someone to do it for you!!

Am I missing something?

I am in the same boat. I have a 2001 Toyota Camry with 190K miles that needs new tires. I am giving the car to my 16yr old to just drive around town so I need something cheap. The price of the tires on those two websites cost the same and have similar specs as the tires at Town Fair Tire (chain store in Northeast) and Town Fair prices INCLUDE the installation/blancing.

Keep the suggestions coming, please!

So far, Tirebuyer seems the best deal. I will stop by my mechanic tomorrow to speak with him and see what he says. He's as honest as they come and if he says that he can do better than I'll go with him. But althought I drive alot- at least 15k miles a year- I really don't want to pay for great tires for a car that will either be a trade in or donation in a year!

plus- I found that ebates gives 3% for tirebuyer!

huskies- the cheapest I found around my area- tampa,fl -was Sam's at 80 a tire- but I have to rejoin. I can get the tires installed there- but I have an axle boot that also needs to be repaired and I'd rather do that with my own mechanic. There was a set of Fusion tires for $66 each at Tirebuyer so with free shipping -then 3% back seems like a good deal to me.

Missing the same thing as I am. Tirerack.com is very expensive even without factoring in the added cost of mounting and balancing. My experience is about $20/tire more and then add another $15/tire to mount and balance some place else.

It might depend on the tires, I've found them to be cheap for my car but not the best deal for my boyfriends.

I just replaced the tires on the car my 19 year old daughter uses and I have to disagree with the statement highlighted above. What you want on the vehicle with an inexperienced driver is a good tire, not necessarily a cheap tire. A 16 year old need the odds stacked in their favor.

I ended up getting the tires I purchased at Sams Club. They were Michelin tires at a little over $100 a tire, but their mounting/balancing was cheaper than the other places I looked at, and the Michelin rebate offered was in instant one off the price instead of a mail-in rebate. The rebate saved me $75. I am happy with the price, both my wife and I are happy with the brand.

Unfortunately, the feds reduce the amount you can deduct for donating the car, and trading it in gets you almost nothing on a car that old. You might want to ask people in your family if they want to buy an extra car or will be having someone getting their license any time soon.

My fiends dad was a manager at the local Dodge dealership and he told me that any car over 100k goes automatically to auction and they only count on getting $500 for it. So anything over that gets tacked on top of the new car price.

Or you could keep it as a 3rd car / commuter beater.

Also, a lot of people near me buy rims/tire for a new car and sell the new take offs on craigslist.

I would not skimp on tires, especially for a teenage/inexperienced driver.

I get always get tires at Costco.

Let me rephrase - "inexpensive". I am not putting crappy tires on her car. And any new tire will be better than what is on there now. And this car will be for around town. When she gets experience driving and wants to drive further distances, i will let her drive one of my newer model cars.

That being said, TFT has solidly rated all seasons for about $75 per tire including installation.

I can check out Costco. I forgot about them.

DH and I need to put new tires on our vehicle. They are around $260 a tire. Consider yourself lucky. ;)

Have you looked for used tires? We have several tire stores here that will sell good used tires, and they charge $35 - 50 each and that includes Mounting and Balancing. I put two used tires on our second car recently, and got 1 used tire for the truck when I had a flat and the spare was no good.

Sam's Club had decent prices. However, our local mechanic also got us a good deal. In each case, I just explained that I was on a budget, and would appreciate any help/advice.

Don't forget to look for rebates with the tire company.

We purchase our tires from Sears and had them mounted at my mechanic's. I also needed an alignment, so overall it was cheaper that way. Buying the tires from Sears we got the extra warranty, and the free interest for 6 months for putting it on the card.
