Evening, any suggestions on what my Dad could do on December 28th in the day on his own? He won't have a car and he won't want to spend a lot, he is in his 60's. Any suggestions would be great - thanks.

Where is he staying? I guess a lot of suggestions will depend on that :)

So difficult, everyone enjoys doing different things. Does he have any interests?

watching sports, walking, visiting national trust type places, he was supposed to go to KSC that day but the tours are about 12 hours long and he thinks thats too much on his own and that he'll be tired.

he could walk to DTD and walk around there window shopping and stopping to eat somewhere - it's a huge area - just walking all of DTD can take a while...
then he could take a disney bus from DTD over to one of the magic kingdom hotels (contemporary, polynesian and grand floridian) and then hop on the monorail, which is free..
he could ride on the monorail around the magic kingdom area hotels and then switch to the monorail that goes over to epcot...then take it back...

riding the monorail is one of my favorite free activities....

since he'll be there when xmas decorations are still up, he should check out the decorations in the grand floridian resort....they're especially lovely...

oh wait...you said in the evening...well he could still either walk around DTD, or hop a bus from DTD to the grand floridian - check out the decorations, then ride around on the monorail...

or go to the polynesian (also by bus from DTD) and watch the MK fireworks from the beach at the poly....

or from the food court at the grand floridian....or if you stand on the dock at the grand floridian, near narcoosees, you can see the fireworks and hear the fireworks soundtrack piped in at narcoosees...

That was going to be my suggestion, get to DTD on the bus to the monorail route, see the 3 resorts and all their decs, Gingerbread house, trees etc.

Thanks I will suggest that.

I didn't mean in the evening though - I was just saying evening to everyone - we are going to DHS in the evening.

Downtown Disney is a great place for a solo person. I'm in my 50's and enjoy eating there and walking through the shops. I hit Ghirardelli first for my chocolate sample... eat at Earl of Sandwich (they have wine and beer) Wolfgang Puck's Express, or House of Blues. Then I walk through the shops, maybe buy a few souvenirs, take the hot air balloon ride, people watch, and get another sample at Ghirardelli. As long as he likes his own company, he'll be fine.

PS: He can eat at Earl of Sandwich for less than $10. Wolfgang Puck's Express and House of Blues will be between $10-$20. All are plus alcohol. The hot air balloon ride is $16.

Thanks I will suggest that.

ok - so ignore the fireworks part...

get himself to DTD....then he can walk around there...
then take a disney bus from there to the Grand Floridian to see the lovely decorations (beautiful tree and yummy smelling gingerbread house that actually has people inside of it selling xmas cookies and things) then ride the monorail around there and then switch to the epcot monorail....then back..

oh...and from DTD, he can ride on the boat that goes from there to the nearby resorts and then back to DTD...

or he could take a disney bus from DTD over to the beach club resort...see the decorations there, then go for a walk around the resorts in that area...

or another idea...
when he takes the monorail around the Magic kingdom resorts, he could get off at the MK stop and from there board the boat that goes over to the Wilderness lodge....it's a lovely boat ride...and then he can check out the wilderness lodge (and its decorations)...i love that resort too...
or he could get off the boat at fort wilderness and go for a walk around the campgrounds there..

no shortage of free things to do..

Hi Claire
Not sure how much it costs but he could go fishing, there are trips that go out from DTD on the lake. That would take care of a half or even whole day easily.

What about walking to DD, getting a resort bus to Fort Wilderness and then walking to Wilderness Lodge? He could then take the boat to MK, catch any resort bus he fancied, then from his chosen resort, take the bus back to DD. Or, if he took the bus from MK to Saratoga, OKW or PO, then the boat back to DD.

Details and pictures of the walk from FW to WL can be found here.

Thanks, i'll list everything and send it to him.

Anymore?

If he likes watching sport then he will adore the ESPN sports bar at Disney's Boardwalk. It's not your regular bar, not sure if you have ever been? It's a blokes paradise though if you like your sport.
May have to get a Taxi there though - sorry I am no expert on WDW tranSPORTation. ;)

It's also the sort of place where he won't feel strange - if that's the word - on his own.
With it not being somewhere Julie & Joshua would like, I have been in there solo a few times and every time have ended up meeting people and watching/talking about sport. Food is okay too and generally decent value for money.
It's also a nice stroll along the Boardwalk itself and would have thought looks good at Christmas.

From DTD to the Boardwalk Inn takes around 25 minutes on the bus. Check the Transportation Wizard here for times/transport modes to other WDW locations.

If he fancied some time away from Disney, then he could visit I-Drive by catching Lynx Bus 50 from DTD to Seaworld then the I-Trolley (website here) along I-Drive.

The Florida Mall can be reached by Lynx bus 111 from DTD.

Finally, Celebration/Kissimmee Old Town can be reached by Lynx Bus 56 from the Transportation and Ticketing Centre at MK.
