We are Canadian, and not inclined to pay for the roaming package from our provider. ($1/mb for data; last week I used 170 mb here at home--which would be $170 if I used their roaming plan!)

I have found a provider called Optel--anyone have any experience with them? Their pay-as-you-go rates are really good ($0.10/mb for data, 0.02 per text), and the sim card is only $5. If they are reliable, that seems like a good deal.

Or? Anyone use a provider with good pay as you go rates?

Who are you with? I have Virgin and I paid $40. For a month, I think the texts were .25 not sure what else I had, but we shopped for Grandkids and sent pictures home for their approval and still didn't go over my allotment. I think Rogers has a pretty good plan.

Denise we are with Eastlink. I have emailed them to ask if there is a better roaming package, but no one working customer service at this hour on the weekend. I pay about $40/mo for local service, everything I need, but roaming is pricey.

A few years ago I left my phone on by mistake and paid dearly for it when I got my bill:(

Last time I was in the US I used net10 - $50 a month pay as you go for unlimited local calls, text and data (or $65 if you want to call internationally. It was a really good deal for me, as it allowed me to take and upload heaps of Disney pictures :-)

Will you be using the phone that much on vacation? There are lots more to do in Orlando than talk and text. But if you still need to buy a phone, Tracfone or Net 10 have 'pay as you go' plans. Maybe about $30 for the phone and about $20 for the airtime (not unlimited, but plenty for your vacation). You can buy these almost anywhere in Orlando, Walmart, Publix, Walgreens, etc

We too are Canadian. We buy a long distance phone card from Independent, No Frills, Value Mart, or what ever Loblaws type of store near by that sells Presidents choice. It is a Presidents choice card, and costs $.04 a minute. They come in denominations of $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 However, many times through the year, they have specials that give you $25.00 worth of minutes for $20.00 so it is much less than $.04 a minute. They expire after 6 months, so we use it for all our long distance, even at home. I don't use it with my cell phone, but I imagine I could. I just use it with the phone in my room, or a pay phone. It works great in all of Canada and U.S.A. I realize this isn't an exact answer to your question, but it is another option.

What I mostly want the phone for is data--checking restaurant reviews and locations, checking attraction hours on the fly, that kind of thing. Also dh and I use texts to stay in touch if we split up. I have Skype on my laptop (actually have a US number which happens to have a Kissimmee exchange.), so long distance isn't an issue. Actually, if I get data it may be worth it to put Skype on my phone...should look into that. (I pay a little extra to have the capacity to call landlines, something I need for work anyway.) Will look into tracfone and net 10, thanks.

You can get Virgin Mobile for like $35 a month unlimited which wouldn't be bad. But you would have to buy a phone too.

There is also AT&T who has a gophone for $10-15 and then you refill it for at least $10. You can do $2 a day unlimited calling and text and then pay for the data.
