So my DS9 is doing the Library summer reading club in our town. The theme is "Getting Creative." The kids have to read at least 2 books about various things that get their minds going. So we have turned this into a very fun thing to do for our upcoming Disney trip. :thumbsup2

First off, we did some scrapbook pages for our upcoming trip to hang in the windows and one for the door so our fellow DISers can sign it. My DS9 did a pirate theme and I did a Princess one. princess:

Another thing we just got done doing was making Pirate swords! We checked out this book called Pirate things to Make and do. It is easy step by step instructions on how to make a pirate sword. We used two sheets of white paper each, one sheet of colored construction paper, aluminum foil, glue stick, crayons, and glitter glue (you could use anything for decorations though). We had a lot of fun with it.

We make our food into Mickey shapes - which makes him want to help cook. Plus, we are going to make a few recipes from the DW or from his jr. Disney cookbook. It gets us stoked and it all is made with stuff from around the house!

Just thought I would share. Anyone do anything like this or have some good ideas for us to do? :yay:

How about tiedying mickey head shirts? Maybe designing a design for shirt an printing it onto shirt or using iron paper?

Have you been to disney before maybe DS could make a collage with pics if you only have 1 print make extra copy so you can still save one in your disney pics of each. Let him do it on poster paper if it turns out really well you can still get a poster frame an frame it.

Plain white tissue paper or wraping paper let him design wrapping paper doesn't have to be disney can be anything he likes. He could either draw the pics himself or use clip art from the computer an trace them on to the wrapping paper an color or use markers etc. Even stencils would work. Or the stamps that ya stick in paint then on paper.

Never to early to start making Christmas cards

What about writing a story? Each one of you could write a paragraph a day let him pick a topic or it wouldn't have to be about anything just a silly story see who can be the silliest.

I have used thin cardboard cut into mickey head glued on construction paper then laminated it an used it for a fan at disney worked well till I lost it the last day on Space Mountain.

Make some posters to hang in window of hotel room of fav disney characters

DS could write a story about what he thinks is disney visit will be like.

Maybe give him a pair of light colored shorts that still good enough for disney but doesn't matter what happens to them an let him use markers to draw mickeys on could make for a very cool pair of shorts for disney an NO ONE would have any like his.

AMC has free summer movies for kids on wednesdays. i think they can buy a pack of popcorn / drink / candy treat for 3 dollars. or you can send them w/ a snack.

google amc free summer movies / amc summer movies and see if this is in your area.

there are a number of restaurants that are offering free food. i would think that going out for a free sandwich or ice cream would be fun for the kiddos.
sonic has a happy hour for ice cream / smoothies / frozen drinks every day.

park districts are building some nice acquatic / water parks. at the library, the kids sometimes book the large conference room and play video games on the huge projection system. some of the kiddos bring snacks / or chip in for pizza. they all share whatever they have and seem to have a blast.

i'm sure there are lots of other things / i just can't think of them now.

along the lines of tie dye...I plan to try a faux batik technique with the kids...where you use gel glue as the resist and then paint on 2 or 3 colors of fabric dye...then wash out the glue (the areas with the glue remain dyeless). I thought we could make some Mickey head designs.

One of may favorite free/cheap (free will donation) activities is going to one of our local nature reserves. We can go for a nice walk, or sometimes I just go to the nature center and look at the displays, some live animals (caged) and read a few animal books in the kids reading room. (I tend to leave the big walks for times when dad is along, I really hate to see snakes, but the kids love them).

We sometimes drive out of our way to try a new or different city park.

"Paint Day" at home..where they paint outdoors and get as dirty as they want, them rinse off in the kiddie pool (then real baths can wait 'til later that night)

Our local pool isn't free, but it is pretty cheap and has a great zero entry, little kids play area.

Our local children's museum is definitely not free, but we usually buy an annual pass and go often (especially in the colder months)...so we more than make up for the cost of the pass.

Clearview theaters also do a Kids Movie for free....we are headed out to it in the next hour!!!

Something else that's fun....save a few jars or old coffee cans and make them into change jars. Decorate them with disney stickers or pictures! Start saving money for a souvenir!!!!
