Chase Sapphire Reserve Rumored Change

I transfer most of my Chase points to Hyatt. No much work figuring it out. For the worst redemptions, Hyatt will give you a pretty decent return.
I ended up doing this to grab a late-night arrival at MCO for an upcoming trip. It came to just about 2.2 cents exactly. Not bad.

Chase apparently briefly posted the new earnings categories to their website before taking them down. Not confirmed but these are more than likely what will be implemented in the coming weeks. Disappointed. I’m thinking of biting the bullet and paying off the majority of not all of my remaining purchase to secure the bonus.

  • 8x Chase Travel bookings (currently 10x for hotels and cars and 5x for flights)
  • 4x flights & hotels booked directly (currently 3x on all travel)
  • 3x dining (same as current)
  • 1x everywhere else (same as current)

Boooooo!

This is maybe not terrible. It removes any transportation charges (rental car, ride share, parking, etc.) but the hotel bump might be enough to matter.

I still might downgrade though; I don't need two premium cards, and this one was already iffy. I have about 125K URs to dispense with, and my anniversary year is November, so maybe I can get some of those spent down first before doing it.

Keep in mind any flights or hotel booked through portals like Chase often don’t count for any loyalty benefits or points/miles with their respective loyalty programs. So if you are Hilton Diamond you wouldn’t get any points for the stay with Hilton nor would you get any of your Diamond benefits. So IMO it’s a terrible change.

Does anyone know how DVC is coded for Chase beyond "travel"? I'm assuming a direct purchase would no longer net 3x points under this change?

I never book flights or hotels through portals. But if I am reading that right, it is 4x for direct to hotels; that is an improvement over the current 3x travel. I had been using my Amex Plat for direct flights (at 5x $0.0125) but 4x (at $0.02) is an improvement there too.

Even so, a $200 +/- annual fee increase is not enough to justify that for me. And that's before losing all of the other transit bonuses.

I’m not sure what you mean. Since it does code as travel it would no longer qualify. Even if it somehow codes different than travel it won’t qualify for extra points

I was thinking if these changes go through and they don’t raise the annual fee to the ridiculous $795 that is rumored you could put all your dining charges to your Folio and that SHOULD code as a hotel and get you 4x. It will be interesting to see how DVC codes, anything is possible and it would be great if codes as a hotel, but seeing how everything else is going im not hopeful I would get that lucky.

Even then, I would really want to see the other benefits before considering it with the high annual fee.

I can get 4x on dining on the Amex Gold and don’t do a lot of cash hotel stays.

Let’s see though. I can see the folio trick working.

So another rumor... important to note its a rumor but... Chase will be removing the ability to redeem points for 1.5¢ per point via the Chase travel portal. Points earned before the cut off date will be eligible to be redeemed until sometime in 2027.

Ive never found using the points through their portal to be worthwile. Ive always been able to get 2, 3 or 4 cents per point in value by transferring to a partner and booking airfare, hotels etc. IMO this is the least terrible change to a great product. All good things…….

I’m really bad about optimizing my rewards. I was happy to get 1.5 cents per point when it is very low fuss. Now it’s 1.25 and I still do it because I’m too lazy to hunt for deals. I do get enough to cover the fee plus a bit more.
But if they make earning points less lucrative, that kind of ruins the whole thing.

I do like the lounge at PHL though. That alone might make Chase worth it still. I’ve been to BOS too, but I usually fly delta so can’t get to the BOS lounge most of the time.
