We put at least $2000 a month on the card and the disney reward points are only like 21 which equals $21.00.

Is that all the program gets?

Most rewards cards are 1%. 1% = 1 dollar for every 100 you spend. So you spend @21k you get $21.

On occasion they have promotions where you get bonus rewards for spending over specified amount on specified categories.

Right. It is a 1% reward. They occasionally offer other discounts and provide a free photo at EPCOT. All of this is detailed on the Disney rewards and Chase website.

The Chase Freedom card is a MUCH better card. You get 5% back in certain categories that change every three months. And you get the 5% back on up to $1500 spent each quarter. Plus you get 1% back on everything else. AND you can get cash back.

I have a Chase Freedom but don't get how the cash back works. Do you see it on your statement? Or do you have to go to the rewards page and choose the option to receive the money?

right under your credit limit, you will see "show points available", click that. You should then see your points. Then right under that you will see a "go to Ultimate Rewards", click on that. This will take you to the rewards page. I always get cash back because it takes the same amount of points as it would if you got a gift card. This is great, most company rewards are structured to where cash will cost you more points to cash in.

My DH and I each have Disney Visas and I just got a promo for the Chase Freedom card. I got $250 for signing up and using it. Also, when I go online to look at my DV balances, the Freedom balance is right there too! My DH also got a promo for it, but expires today so we have to decide if it's worth another $250 or not because we are looking at getting a new car and don't want it to affect our credit.

Depending on your use (or non-use) of the Disney Rewards Visa, you may get promos offering more than 1% back. Recently, I have gotten offers that any spending over $300 a month will triple the rewards, up to an extra bonus of $100. I took advantage of this for 3 months, and right when it ended, I received another promo offering the same terms for the next 3 months. On my other Disney card, the bonus was good for spending over $500 a month.

For travel rewards, I find airline miles or hotel points to be a better bang for your buck. I used to use my United Airlines card (also Chase) for everything and spent enough to earn enough miles for 1 free domestic ticket a year. Depending on what I wanted to use the free ticket for, it could save me way more than 1% in costs. DH is flying back to PA this week to help his mother out, if we'd paid for the ticket OOP it would have been over $600. it was 25k miles, so I spent $25k to earn it. That's way more than 1%

I've now switched to Starwood hotel points (sheraton/westin, offered by Amex) and I estimate we can earn a free 7 night stay about every two years or so. A 7 night stay at most places we want to book is at least $1100, so $550 a year in rewards (at least) all for spending $25k a year (give or take). Again, way more than 1% And we can use it at the Dolphin (or is it the Swan? can't remember) so that includes trips to WDW!

Now even at a lower 1%, a Disney Visa may still be your best bet, depending on your travel habits. But I find having either a cash back (which is usually around 2% or so) or a more flexable travel program to have better returns and/or more travel options.

I have never once gotten a promo from Chase rewards.. everyone keeps talking about them, but all I get is my 1%. I get enough every year to renew my annual Disney pass and still have some points left over.. that is all I use my points for basically. The left overs just keep piling up. I keep convert them to a gift card and keep them on there.

I have a Disney Visa and a Freedom card. I've been using the Freedom card a lot more since I got it. I got $300 back first off after spending $1500 the first 3 months on it and now it has 5% cash back on gas for 3 months. I already have over $400 cash back coming and I'm saving it all for Disney. If Disney comes out with a good promo, I'll switch back to that card.

Chase Freedom has a different 5% cash back every quarter. 5% cash back on gas, hotels and travel ends 9/30. Next Quarter is restaurants, department stores and I think Kohls specifically. You have to register to receive the 5% cash back up to $1500. Not sure if you can do it over the phone, I do it on line. You have to register every quarter.

OOPs, I realized you are probably talking about Disney Visa promos. I've had the card for 1.5 yrs and only got 2 offers. One was a way higher minimum than I could reach and the other was one I earned about $12 extra on over 3 months; covers 1 CS at WDW.

You can register via phone, website or ATM (if you have a Chase debit card - the freedom is all connected).

Bad math. 1% of $21K is $210 not $21.

I think you can do better than 1%.

We travel quite a bit and I like the Southwest Visa. I also like Blue Sky by American Express and it has no annual fee.

This is what Discover does as well (along with awesome cash back for most online shopping if you click through the discover website and use your card).

Discover has a lot lower limit on the quarterly bonuses and you don't earn 1% until you reach $3000 in your calendar year; until then its .25%. All details I did not know until I read it here on the DIS Budget Board.:)
