My brother had a big party 2 years ago and since his b-day is so close to christmas, he decided to ask everyone to bring a toy to donate to a local charity instead of giving him a gift. It worked out great because he was able to invite as many people as he wanted and it was a b-day/christmas party. I am planning my b-day party for late september, and want to do the same thing, however, I want to help a different charity this time. Should I ask people to bring canned goods, or blankets, or clothes, or something else????? Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm sure the canned goods would be welcomed at the food shelf. How about things for the homeless shelter or a women's shelter? Sometimes they like to have a new stuffed animal or toy to give to kids, or for them to have to play with at the shelter.

I'd say do whatever is near and dear to your heart. That is a great idea, BTW!

Some friends of ours just relocated to Hawaii and their son's birthday was right before they left. Rather than have him get a bunch of gifts they would have to ship over (he was already getting gifts from family there) they had all the children bring something for P.A.W.S. (Progressive Animal Welfare Society) which is a local no-kill shelter. The son chose the charity. I thought it was so unselfish of him to do that. I was really impressed with him. What a great kid!
