Charging to room key

Is it true that you can charge all expenses, i.e. food, souveniers, to your Disney Resort room key and then pay up at the end of your stay?

As long as you leave a credit card number on file with the front desk, yes its true. I think every evening your card is charged for that day's expenses

Yes, and we love to do this. You must either have a credit card or a major company's debit card(I believe..as we always use our MC debit) to do this. You will be given a limit and you need to keep track of it...the Front Desk can let you know from day to day what your total is. We normally have a limit of $1000, which is perfect because that's what we normally allow(when we don't have the Dining Plan). I believe(correct me if I'm wrong) that if you don't have a credit or debit card, you can pay ahead with cash, and still charge things. This at least allows you to not have to carry cash into the parks.

It's been our experience that our card wasn't charged until checkout time, but I don't know if that would vary with the CM and or resort...

They don't technically charge your card till checkout but they do place a hold on the funds so you cannot overcharge your card and not have the money to pay.

They have limits I think it's $500 value ,$1000 mod and $1500 delux.When you hit the limit or check and it's close they will charge it and let you start over.

The only places that don't take it is Most DTD non disney locations ,Some Snack carts and walking vendors at shows.

Yes you can also give them Cash or Travels checks as a hold and settle up at check-out

tmt - which places at DTD do not accept it? I don't think I've ever encountered anywhere (except the snack carts before they started taking them) that didn't take them, but I may just not be going to those places. TIA

HOB, Wolfgang Puck, Rainforest (I think), Fultons....I'm sure there are a couple more at DTD that don't take the room charge. It's typically the non-Disney places, although Earl of Sandwich does take it.

There are a few other places around the world that don't also. The wine tasting place in France at Epcot is cash only, as is the little snow-cone stand at Japan. Those are just a couple that come to mind.

I guess the point is, it's always best to carry some cash just in case. Last Saturday night there were 3 people in front of us at the stand in France that had to run to the ATM machine in the American Adventure because they didn't realize it was a cash only stand.

When you check in, the CM will ask if you want charging privileges on your room key. To do so, you'll need a credit or debit card with the proper amount available, or that amount of cash.

Someone above posted the limits per type of resort. Keep in mind you DON'T need to allow that much of a limit. I wanted to know how my spending was going, so even though I stayed at a moderate and could have a $1,000 limit I opted to make my limit $500. Your card does not get charged until you reach that limit. Once you reach it, you can't use your room key to charge until you go to your resort's front desk and, well, "recharge" your room key.

For two adults and two kids, we lasted from Sunday morning until about mid-day Friday on that $500 (we'd prepaid for Hoop Dee Doo, I used 5 counter-service vouchers that some kind board poster mailed to me, and our kids had about $200 in Disney Dollars to spend on souvenirs). We ate counter service (by choice, not because of money matters) except for one character dinner at Crystal Palace. After my room charge was declined on Friday afternoon at a souvenir kiosk in Tommorowland, I paid cash or charged the rest of the time since we were leaving the next day.

It was soooo convenient to not have to carry much cash, and also to have only one $500 debit on my bank statement rather than 30 or 40 individual charge transactions to try to keep track of. By the way, you can go to Guest Services in your resort at any time to get an up-to-date print-out of your room charges, if you like to keep track of those things. In addition, EVERY place you can use your room charge will give you a receipt for your transaction.

WDW LOVR - thanks for the info. HOB we paid cash as that trip we didn't use the room charging privileges and RFC I know we used our card. ( would it have mattered if it were the one at AK?) We haven't been to the other 2 yet so it's good to know we'll need cash if we do get there. Thanks

I'm going with a friend in September. Can we each put our own credit cards on our own room keys? Or, do we have to just use one card for both of us? I used this in October and then paid cash when we checked out. It was great!

Only 1 card can be on room keys but what my friend was told was that she could go to front desk and tell them to charge her card for certain charges, we never tested it so not really sure but it makes sense as you can go to front desk and say pay cash instead of having your cc charged. this needs to be done before your last night prior to checkout since charges are run at like 2a of check out day.

I don't think that's true. A few years ago at POFQ we left our debit card at the desk. I forgot to transfer money from savings into checking the night before we checked out. They called our room at around 7am to say the charge wouldn't go through.

I know this can't be true as I put a cc down and know for fact there wasn't 500.00 aval credit on it.
