I sorta remember reading that WDW has problems distinguishing OOP from DDP when paying at restaurants with the resort card. Is it best to put the DDP on the resort card and pay for OOP with a seperate credit cards or cash?

I don't think they have any problems distinguishing between the two. The problem occurs when there is some issue with the DDP transaction. In that case, the default is to bill the meal to the room...which transfers the restaurant's problem to the guest who then must get it fixed.

I don't want to waste my vacation time straightening out someone else's mess, so we always decline bill-to-the-room privileges. Just one less thing to worry about.

We haven't had any problem paying OOP for meals while using our room key. We just make sure to tell our server at the beginning of the meal that we are not using credits. It would be easy to tell if there is an error as the final copy of a bill using the DDP shows $0 as the total cost. But we've had no issues.

I suggested to my DH using a cc instead of the room key for our OOP meals but he prefers to just use the room key. We've used the DDP three times now without any problems.:confused3

We put the credit card on the adult keys and left it off the children's keys. We could give the server the children's cards if we were using the dining plan or our cards if we were paying OOP. Also, I could hand the teenager his card to get a snack and not be too worried about the cashier ringing it up correctly.

Can you get a second card so you can do this if you are travelling solo? One card with the charging priveliges and one without to use for the dining plan?

That is exactly what we did, and we had no problems. If we were ordering something off the plan, we would give the waiter one of our room keys for bill to the room. I will say this, though. At Chefs de France, we were dining with my DH's family- as we had the entire trip. This was our last night, and we all presented our dining cards for the waiter to take. My DSIL had charging priveleges on her card, and yet the waiter came to our table to let us know that he was unable to bill the DDP, as she was apparently out of credits. We were shocked, as she had eaten every TS meal with us! After some sleuthing, they discovered that LeCellier had double billed her for dinner the night before. So, I'm not entirely sure that they would automatically bill the room. This might have been an isolated experience.

No, each card for the room has to have the dining plan on it.

Not what I meant, Can I have one card to charge to a credit card for buying things and paying out of pocket and one card to use to with the ddp. BOTH with the dining credits but only one with credit charging on it.

We too decline charging priviledges on our room card when using the DDP. Our trip in Feb at the WLV they accidently put charging priviledges on our card and within 24 hours we had 2 unwanted charges on our room card because the CMs made a mistake and charged our room instead of the DDP credits. We spent about 30 minutes at the front desk straightening it out. (It happens at Harbor House and Mrs. Potts). If you use both on your card, you need to keep track of your credits carefully. That's how I caught mine, especially when looking at the receipt and it didn't mention credits at all, I knew it had been charged.

n2MM, did you notice the charge on the receipts immediately or after the fact? I wonder (and would hope) if the CMs at HH and Mrs. Potts could have rectified their errors on the spot?:confused3 Even for snacks the receipts read $0.00 as I recall right?

When I read of people having to spend vacation time sorting out errors, it drives me nuts. I wonder if there isn't a better way....as in here are my receipts...fix it. I'm off to play.

The lines at HH where huge, as expected and the CM realized what he had done after the fact. It was going to be a big deal, involving managers overriding the system. We were not happy that there was not a quick fix so we were happy that the CMs at the WL had no problem fixing it (they commented that this happens often and daily). Though we did go to one CM at the desk who did not have a clue, so had to call a veteran who clicked away at the computer and fixed it all. As for the snack credit, the CM at Mrs. Potts just downright refused to honor the DDP snack credit, even with the purple ddp next to the item. She said the snack credit didn't go through because it was not allowed so automatically charged our room key...yikes. We tried arguing, but got no where. It was a frustrating day and we had used the DDP 4 earlier trips, so we knew what we were doing. If we don't see the purple ddp next to the snack we don't even try. We have found it just easier to not have the charging priviledges on our card. We carry cash with us and our Disney Visa, so no need to have the charging on our room key--this is what works for us. BTW: if you don't see how many credits at the bottom of our receipt are left, that is a good sign that credits were not used for the meal purchase. When using credits, it will always say how many were used during the transaction and how many are left. AFter using the DDP 6 trips since 2006 we pretty much got it down to an art. (BTW: We love that DVC members can add this to our reservations!! )

Thanks for the reply, n2MM. I knew you were veterans with the whole thing. Just wondered if there could be a quick fix at point of purchase.

As I said, we've not had problems...yet. But I'll tell my DH about your experiences. Maybe he'll change his mind. But I doubt it. ;)

BTW, you were more tolerant of the Mrs.Potts CM's stubborness than I would have been. I think I would have asked for a manager. Of course, that is easy to say sitting in front of my computer instead of in a busy park.:surfweb:

I'm grateful we can add the DDP as DVC members too. That plus the $100 off APs is very sweet.:thumbsup2

I guess with ice cream in hand and fighting with the CM, the ice cream won.
