Because this DIS board is my source to everything, here is my question.

I have a sister who is a missionary in Africa (Mozambique). She wants a Nintendo DS for her 3 kids to share. My question is charging the batteries. She says that the US charger will not work with her voltage.

This is what she asked me and I don't have a clue:

"DS... if it is like a cell phone charger, we should be able to get one here. I don't think that you get the European plug there. If the input reads "110-220 v" or something like that, we can use it. If the input is below 220 only, we can't do a thing with that charger- it isn't worth it's weight to send. Let me know the output... "

She would really like one but obiviously not worth it to send if she can't charge it.

Any help or expertise would be greatly appreciated.
THANK YOU!
Pam

You do need a new charger for her. We had a different one when we lived overseas. If they can buy a 220 DS charger somewhere nearby (?) then they'll be fine.

Otherwise maybe you could order her one from amazon.fr. That way the correct charger would just be included. Here's a link to the si...

http://www.amazon.fr/Console-Ninten...m=A1X6FK5RDHNB96&pf_rd_r=0WN60Q2Q2YNYJRX0Y60X

Here are the regular DSs:

http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=amb_link...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=472626633&pf_rd_i=548738

I know it's in French, but it's still Amazon and you could *maybe* just order it and have it shipped right there?

Good luck!

While ordering a console from a european source sounds easy, be sure to find out what the exchange rate is!

I would think the UK version has the same plug(charger)as the french version but not sure.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nintendo-DS..._4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1254398826&sr=8-4

Example:

uk DSi is 134.99 in pounds but in dollars that is $217.38

your french DS is 139,00 Euros is $203.53

Find out if she has the same plugs as Tanzania if so she needs a D or G adaptor/transformer.

Good Luck I hope you can get things worked out for her.

Can't you just use the travel adapter. Plug the system into the adapter and then plug the adapter into the wall. Travel adapters have all the different types of plugs right on the unit. :thumbsup2

No you cannot. The adapter that comes with the ds only 'does' 110.
I've lived in Europe and Africa with our kids, so I speak from experience.

Sorry if that was misconstrued I used the UK as an example never meant they were the same as Africa, that said doesn't it depend on where you are?

According to the website I checked Tanzania used the same plug as UK.

Just pointing out that if she were to buy it from a foreign amazon be sure and convert the money because all European prices are higher than US and would not be such a good deal compared to a converter.

My nephew bought a DS when he was here(lives in UK) and then just bought the charger for it in the UK I believe.

I stand corrected then.
And we bought our DS's in the US but then bought European plugs for them in Belgium, but we weren't in Tanzania so I don't know if that will make it harder.

It looks like Tanzania has the possibility of two different plugs?:confused3

OP here.

I was looking around online and saw that there is such thing as a
USB charger for a DS.

Has anyone here used one of these? I am thinking that this might be the best option for here then I don't have to worry about the voltage, etc.

What do you think? She has a laptop.

I appreciate all the replies. I just don't know enough about her power supply.

She lives in a remote part of Mozambique and mailing her items is very "iffy"; she usually doesn't receive anything we send. My aunt is visiting her later this month and can take something with her from here if we are sure she can use it when it gets there.

any info is appreciated. Thanks
Pam
