It is quite probable that the manager guy did in fact call it "guest services" and not "concierge." I probably just used the word "concierge" and heard the word "concierge," since that's what that kind of desk is called at other non-WDW hotels. Although we've stayed many many times at WDW, I'd never really understood that desk was "guest services" too, which is a term that usually makes me think of the windows near the parks.
Anyway, since that is the official disney-ism for that particular kind of desk, the guy we spoke to appeared to me to be the type who would use the correct disney-speak. So my direct quote attributed to "DJ" is probably not a quote at all; just what I thought I heard.
But, in any event, whatever it's called, the only point was that perhaps my recent experience with having the credit card pre-authorized was unusual, because the place where we were checked in did not appear to be a typical or common checking in place and the professional doing the checking in did not appear to be someone who did that frequently. (Either that or perhaps I looked particularly untrustworthy. ;0) ) I now wish I'd avoided this thread entirely, because although I thought I'd had something interesting to add, it looks only to have created confusion!
