Charged more for allergy friendly food at TS

Okay then. All the more to my point.

They make it specially which takes even MORE effort than replating.

Have you contacted them for clarification? Because all that any of us can do is speculate.

And sadly too many are speculating with no real experience.

Yes, as I said I have contacted them(have been following up).

As far as the notion that Disney charges for MORE effort, no they do not. Additionally, nothing special was done to prepare the meal.

From what I have been told so far, I was charged more just because of allergies.

Use of the word 'sadly' is disappointing. People are speculating because this hasn't happened to anyone reading this thread. We're just trying to help, provide possible reasons for the upcharge in the absence of any explanation from WDW.

I'm going to speculate that a mistake was made on the OP's check, and hope I don't get reprimanded for taking that action. I'm outta this thread.

Interesting update!

Per the Chef, he is not aware of any additional charge. But since I first contacted them, they have gotten several complaints about higher charges when "regular" food has been served.

It seems this charge is also appearing at other table service locations. So it may be a "new" policy, or as a manager suggested-people are misunderstanding the current policy.

I will update when I have more info. princess:

Please update when you have more information. I certainly hope Disney isn't charging more for food allergic people to eat (unless it is a special food/ingrdient with a higher cost like Divvies...but we are talking mashed potatoes and grilled chicken). Charging disabled individuals more to eat what their non-disabled counterparts eat is a slippery slope.

We were on the Dining Plan in 2008 (last time we've used it) and were charged an Adult Plate rather than a Child's Plate at Coronado Springs (can't remember the name of the place) because my daughter could not safely eat anything on the Child's Menu (despite the fact that I had asked prior to purchasing the meal plan and again before ordering at the restaurant). The Children's Menu contained eggs/nuts which she was allergic to. The chef said the roasted chicken would be safe for her (technically on the adult menu) and he'd give her a smaller portion and mashed potatoes. She did not get dessert which was included because none were safe. We did not get a discount for that ;). At the end of the meal, we were charged for an Adult and the manager would not budge. It was our last night of that trip and I contacted Disney when I got home.

I just wanted to make sure they were distributing correct information for future cusomers. One meal was not a big deal to us, but what if that happened every night??? We would have run out of planned meals much too soon. They said we should not have been charged extra for her meal because they were not able to accommodate her needs on the Children's Menu after we were told they could.

Overall, Disney is excellent with food allergies and has gone above & beyond. I can't complain much about that one meal because we've had great extras handed to DD over the years by very accommodating chefs .

I love that Disney has not made us feel like we were burdening them by bringing our daugter into their restaurants with all of her allergies. I hope they continue to be accommodating without upcharing. Where would that stop? They could charge additional fees for all sorts of conditions (not food-related) if this trend started :scared1:

My son is allergic to milk. When I tried to use the silk soy milk as his drink, the cashier told me that wasn't a 'kids' drink. I told her he was allergic to milk and she let it go.

At counter service places, sometimes they let it go and sometimes they charge more. "Technically" per WDW policy they can charge more for the soy milk.

I am starting to wonder if some employees are misunderstanding. If the new policy is to charge more for allergy free specific foods it may be that employees are believing it means a charge for ANY allergy free change. Even if that change is only a small one (like in this case). They may be interpreting the change as being more then it really is.

I am hoping it is just a policy misunderstanding. I do find it interesting that no one has been able to come up with a clear cut answer yet. Hopefully soon :).

It could be difficult to come up with a clear cut reasoning depending on how many "reports" they have of it. If only a couple people report it, then it can be hard to find a link between the reports. The more people who tell them it happened, the more likely they can narrow down the issue.

I do hope an answer will be forthcoming though.

We were there for 10 days Aug 23- Sept 2nd. My son has PA/TNA and my Mom has Cealic. Were we never charged extra for the food allergy. Actually my son wanted a hot dog one night and there were no kid hot dogs on the menu, so they gave us the allergy free adult meal at the kids price of a chicken nugget meal. Besides that, every time we order we have to get allergy safe food and never were charged for it. My mother did get the wheat free Mac and cheese one time and she wanted Chicken nuggets too, but since the mac and cheese did not come with a side the Chicken nuggets were considered another meal and she had to pay for it, but of course that makes sense. Your situation doesn't make sense I hope it was a mistake. I can't see Disney doing that.
As long as the meal is on the menu, such as chicken and mash potatoes at x amount, then allergy or not it should/ and has always been the same price allergy or not. If you substitute and item then maybe that's why the higher price not because it's an allergy. maybe the cashier was wrong that mash potatoes and fries are the same price. I hope this is all figured out soon and that Disney is charging more.

Once again, I did not substitute anything. The chef did once he found the fries were not safe. I'm sorry, but I don't agree that it is ok for Disney to charge more.

I think I am going to ask the mods to go ahead and close this thread since it just seems to be a rehashing over and over again.
