I was just told that there are no characters that walk around the parks anymore and you can only meet them by waiting on line/fast pass. Is that true?? I haven't been to Disney in about 10 yrs but when I was last there they were everywhere!

Not completely true. While it is uncommon for the characters to roam about, we did run into a group from Country Bear Jamboree and the Song of the South movie in Frontier Land during our trip this past January.

The very popular characters (the fab 5, princesses, fairies) all have long lines. As nice as it was in the past to have characters wandering around, I do not believe that this would work with the crowds today. As annoying as the lines are, it does prevent your little one from being mowed down by rude, thoughtless adults as they push their little princess in front of her. Now, even shy, well behaved children get to see these characters

While wandering around, I have seen other characters in out of the way places. (Wicked step mom and sisters, good fairies)

You can get a pretty good schedule of these from Kenny the pirate website.

DHS has Character Palooza which is an unstructured meet and greet with 10 or more characters. The characters are out for about 20 minutes on the Streets of America in the afternoons. Kennythepirate.com has the scheduling.
