Characters using sharpie

I thought I read somewhere that a character denied signing an autograph because it was a sharpie marker and they pointed to their costume... Are they allowed to sign with sharpie? Or does it have to be with pen?

I actually carried a zip lock baggie last trip with sharpies of multiple colors for the characters to use. A CM handler told me it was a great idea and that the sharpies were like gold around them.
I always thought the characters needed to sign with a sharpie because of their gloves and costumes?

We have used a sharpie all week but it is one that is retractable so no lid to mess with

They will sign with anything they can grip well enough, UNLESS their hands are just too big to hold anything (Buzz, Sully, and King Louie first come to mind). Otherwise pen, pencil, sharpie, whatever. Thicker barrelled retractable sharpies are the most user friendly.

I bought the fine point sharpies for my last trip for a photo mat I wanted them to sign. After reading about the retractable sharpies on here, I decided to get them as well. They were PERFECT! Not to big, not to small, no lids. We had 8 colors in a zip lock bag and it just kept in with the mat in my bag for easy access. I highly recommend the retractable ones.

Whenever I've done character interactions they've always been happy to use sharpies. As a kindness to the characters I'd recommend full-size or larger sharpies only, no miniature markers. Also, they'll have the easiest time of it if you uncap (or click out) the marker yourself and hand it to them the right way around (I don't know if he still meets, but back in 2009 I got Kenai's autograph and he had a hard time of it with his big old paws). They'll do their best with an unopened marker, of course, but it's understandably difficult.
